Excimer laser therapy can be really effective for scalp psoriasis, says Dr. Farber. The laser directs UVB light to the psoriasis plaques where it helps reduce inflammation and scaling. “Sometimes intralesional injections of low dose steroids directly on to the resistant spot on scalp works nicely,” Dr. Farber says. Add these foods to your diet for healthier hair.

Book Appointment Plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis and it gets its name from the plaques that build up on the skin. There tend to be well-defined patches of red raised skin that can appear on any area of the skin, but the knees, elbows, scalp, trunk, and nails are the most common locations. There is also a flaky, white build up on top of the plaques, called scales. Possible plaque psoriasis symptoms include skin pain, itching, and cracking.

Consultations The causes of psoriasis are not fully understood today. The current consensus is that the immune system, genetics and the environment (e.g. stress, cold weather, etc.) all play major roles in the development of psoriasis. As a result there is skin inflammation accompanied by overproduction of skin cells.

To some people it feels like a burning sensation. No matter how bad it gets, try not to scratch. While it may feel good in the moment, it can break open the skin and make you bleed. That can set you up for hair loss and a possible infection.

Farber EM DHHS Why it works: “Topical steroids work by reducing the inflammation that’s driving the skin changes seen in psoriasis,” Daveluy says. This type of treatment for scalp psoriasis is likely to be a liquid instead of a cream. When your hair is wet, create a part and apply a small amount. Then create a new part right next to it, and apply again, and keep doing this until your whole scalp has been treated, he says. A shower cap may also be worn to keep the product from staining pillowcases.

Brochures Biological therapy has revolutionized moderate to severe psoriasis treatment. However, despite being more effective than conventional systemic treatments, some patients do not respond or lose response to biotechnological treatments or develop drug-antibodies, interfering with its safety and efficacy. There are also clinical forms of the disease and patient profiles for which is pending further scientific evidence for more sustained therapeutic interventions. The continuous and more detailed knowledge of psoriasis pathophysiology has allowed identifying new therapeutic targets, which is expected to help overcome the challenges of individualized psoriasis treatment.

Ruzicka T Drug N of studies N of patients Anti-drug antibodies (%) Association of anti-drug antibodies with: It is now clear that there is a genetic basis for psoriasis. This hereditary predisposition is necessary before the disease can be triggered by environmental factors. White blood cells called T-cells mediate the development of the psoriatic plaques that are present in the skin. When someone has psoriasis, their body is unable to offer protection from invaders. Instead, inflammation is promoted and skin cells are on overdrive. When cell growth is increased, old skin cells pile up instead of flaking off, causing psoriasis to occur. Currently, most experts conclude that environmental, genetic and immunologic factors interact to cause the disease.

Grouping according to PASI (0-5, 5.1-10, and >10) produced no significant differences in the descriptive analyses (Figure 4A). However, surprisingly, regression analyses indicated that participants with a higher PASI considered the probability of benefit less important ( β = −0.18; P = .02) but the frequency of treatment more important ( β = 0.17; P = .04; Table 4) compared with participants with a lower PASI. When subgroups according to disease-related quality-of-life impairment were created (Figure 4B), those with a DLQI between 11 and 20 (demonstrating relatively poor quality of life) regarded the probability of improvement as significantly more important than did patients with a DLQI between 0 and 5 (P = .02 in descriptive analyses). However, this result did not persist in our multivariate regression analysis (Table 4).

Addiction Dietary supplements may also be beneficial for people with psoriasis. Oral (by mouth) or intravenous (injected into a vein) supplementation with fish oil is one supplement with possible benefits. Topical fish oil therapy is an option but most people find it unpleasant to use because of the odour of the oil. Folic acid supplementation is essential for people using the folic acid antagonist, methotrexate. Oral and topical vitamin D have also proven effective in treating psoriasis. Recent evidence for a dietary supplement based on proteins isolated from cows is promising; the therapy is safe and significantly reduced disease severity compared to no treatment in one study.
Psoriasis has been linked to other health conditions. Psoriasis is not thought to cause these conditions or vice versa. Patients with psoriasis have a greater likelihood of being diagnosed with the following conditions:
Topical (skin applied) treatments include topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogue creams like calcipotriene (Calcitrene, Dovonex, Sorilux), topical retinoids (tazarotene [Tazorac]), moisturizers, topical immunomodulators (tacrolimus and pimecrolimus), coal tar, anthralin, and others.

With the methotrexate cos I was given loads of information about it cos it’s such a strong drug, when I first started. And, with psoriasis it’s used in very low doses. But in higher doses it can be used for chemotherapy treatments and things like that. Which scared me a bit. But then I spoke to my dermatologist and he said, you know, “It’s in very low doses and because it can affect your liver.” I had to have blood tests every two weeks. So they were very, very good at monitoring the effect on me. But, I was in my final year of university and had final exams and essays and stuff. And, it made me feel sickly. I took it once a week. And I think I took it on a Monday and the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I always felt really, really sickly and headache-y as well, which was strange. But things like going out for a meal. I’d go out for a meal with my boyfriend. I can remember one particular time, we went to this lovely Indian and I couldn’t eat anything. I had this sort of starter and I felt really sick and I love Indian food. And, so just, it affected me like that. And it was, it was a shame, really, cos my skin, I felt the best I felt, like I felt like I looked normal, you know what I mean? And but yet, I was feeling so sick and headache-y and quite tired, I think. And it just, it got to the point, I was on it for a good few months, and it got to the point where I thought, ‘I’d rather have a bit, a bit of psoriasis and keep it under control with topical things maybe, than feel like this all the time’. And like I say, it affected my social life as well. And I know it shouldn’t. It really shouldn’t have, cos you do not need alcohol to be sociable. But I think it’s [coughs] it’s quite a big aspect of uni life and things. And I did still go out and not drink and had a nice time. But I felt that my friends were thinking, ‘oh, she’s been boring, she’s not drinking’ and didn’t really understand how serious the medicine was, where you can’t drink on it, cos it can really affect your liver. So, it did come with, with a lot of problems in my experience. And unless it got very, very, very bad, I probably wouldn’t like to go on it again.
