However, the cutaneous side effects are more commonly problematic than significant HPA axis suppression, which is seldom an issue.8 Patient Online Services Svensson L HS Booklet attach icon How Does Light Therapy Work for Psoriasis? Hypercalcemia is a potential side effect of this agent when the dosage exceeds 100 g per week. This effect does not usually occur with weekly use of 100 g or less.11,12 Most reports of hypercalcemia have been in patients who received prolonged therapy with 200 g or more per week. For localized psoriasis, the recommended dosages do not require monitoring of serum or urinary calcium levels. However, calcipotriene should be used with caution in patients with compromised renal function or a history of renal calculi. The most common side effect with these agents is mild skin irritation. Some topical vitamin D analogues may take up to 6 to 8 weeks for their full effect. Disease that is considered too extensive to be treated by topical approaches, that is usually greater than 5%-10% of the total body surface area, is an appropriate indication for this sort of treatment. Resistance to conventional topical treatment is another indication for light therapy. Although normal sunlight contains these wavelengths, self-exposure to sunlight must be done in under controlled conditions to minimize burns. In a physician's office, control of the amount of light energy administered to each patient is essential. Medical light sources use special wavelengths of light and timers to assure the correct dosage of light. Sunlamps and tanning booths are not acceptable substitutes for medical light sources. Ultraviolet light from any source is known to produce skin cancer, but this side effect is minimized when the light is appropriately administered in a physician's office. Individuals with psoriasis aged 18 years or older who attended outpatient clinics at the Dermatology Department of the University Medical Centre Mannheim between December 1, 2009, and September 30, 2010, were asked to participate in the study. To ensure that the full range of antipsoriatic treatments (ie, local therapy, UV therapy, classic systemic therapy, or biologicals) would be valid options, only patients with moderate to severe psoriasis according to the criteria of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use29 were recruited. These included (1) those with a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) of 10 or more30; (2) patients with psoriatic involvement of the hands, feet, or head; (3) patients with psoriatic arthritis according to Classification of Psoriatic Arthritis criteria31; and (4) those receiving systemic antipsoriatic therapy. Patients visiting our department for the first time, patients coming for follow-up visits, and those with and without ongoing antipsoriatic therapy were included. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty Mannheim and performed according to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki. Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that may cause large plaques of red, raised skin, flakes of dry skin, and skin scales. There are several types of psoriasis, including psoriasis vulgaris, guttate psoriasis, inverse psoriasis, and pustular psoriasis. Symptoms vary depending on the type of psoriasis the patient has. Treatment of psoriasis may include creams, lotions, oral medications, injections and infusions of biologics, and light therapy. There is no cure for psoriasis. Sunlight is renowed for being good for skin conditions  -  but here the sunshine was said to be unique. Apparently the Dead Sea has its own ozone layer, filtering out more damaging rays that cause skin cancer, burning and ageing. Scalp Psoriasis - Scalp Psoriasis Psoriasis appears as a small bump, a papule, surmounted by scale. When these papules coalesce, a plaque is formed that is often covered by thick layers of horny scale. When this scale is shed, it appears as dandruff, which can be quite unsightly. Scratching these plaques, either because of itching or because of the impulse to remove it, is a very poor idea because of what is called the Koebner phenomenon (also known as the Koebner response or isomorphic response). This may cause psoriasis to develop in areas of inflammation and trauma. Scratching off the scale will only make things worse. Although most patients do not note hair loss, there can be extensive alopecia hair loss (alopecia) in severe cases. Exercise and rest help maintain your health and reduce stress. They also reduce the risk of heart disease (which is higher in those with psoriasis). There are many different types of psoriasis, and some may occur at the same time. Examples of different types of psoriasis include: FDA has approved a new oral drug, apremilast (Otezla), to treat psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, with an entirely novel mode of action (inhibition of an enzyme, phosphodiesterase 4) and does not require intensive laboratory monitoring. Cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma in patients treated with PUVA. Skin lesions may make you feel unattractive, some people feel embarrassed about their bodies, or even stay at home to avoid social situations. Some have difficulty interacting with co-workers, and even family and friends, because they feel self-conscious about the appearance of their skin. The differentiation of psoriatic arthritis from rheumatoid arthritis and gout can be facilitated by the absence of the typical laboratory findings of those conditions. Although evidence is lacking for conventional agents such as acitretin, methotrexate, and cyclosporine, a few clinical trials looking at the response of scalp psoriasis to biologic therapy and newer agents have been reported, either as sub-analyses or prespecified end points. Overall, scalp psoriasis does improve in conjunction with improvement of body psoriasis with all systemic therapies. The authors demonstrated that the "effectiveness" domain is the most likely to improve, in a manner consistent with what had previously been described, and therefore conclude that, in order to overcome the need for satisfaction, more effective therapies will have to be available.68 psoriasis drugs market psoriasis drugs new psoriasis drugs oral
