Roujeau JC Have an account? Causes Psoriasis has a genetic basis and can be inherited. Some people carry genes that make them more likely to develop psoriasis. Just because a person has genes that would make him more likely to have psoriasis doesn't mean he will have the disease. About one-third of people with psoriasis have at least one family member with the disease. Certain factors trigger psoriasis to flare up in those who have the genes.
Psoriasis is less common in regions characterised by warm sunny weather conditions.

What is Psoriasis? Psoriasis has a strong genetic element (it runs in families). The risk of inheriting the condition is greatest in children with both parents and a sibling affected, and children with one or both parents (but no sibling) affected are also at increased risk. Age of onset is also influenced genetically, so people whose parents developed the condition early in life are also likely to develop psoriasis early in life. Studies have identified several genes which may affect the risk of a person developing psoriasis.
Identifying and avoiding food allergens which trigger psoriasis is another possible strategy. Many people with psoriasis are gluten intolerant and a gluten-free diet may be beneficial for this group. Obesity is a risk factor for the condition and maintaining a healthy weight is important.

Myth: Psoriasis is just "dry" skin. Virtual Reality A systematic review of 90 studies confirmed that patients with psoriasis had a higher risk of ischemic heart disease, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease but also a greater prevalence of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, compared with controls. The authors concluded that large prospective studies with long-term followup are required to determine whether psoriasis is an independent risk factor for vascular disease or is merely associated with known risk factors. Another study identified psoriasis as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease in women, especially if they had psoriatic arthritis and suffered from psoriasis for a longer time period (>9 y).
