Languages According to the WHO, males and females are affected equally. Caucasians are affected disproportionately. People of color make up a very small proportion of psoriasis diagnoses.

Lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet and weight, also can help ease the symptoms.
Ten home remedies for treating psoriasis Mohs AUC The patient with refractory lesions may benefit from more advanced forms of treatment, such as phototherapy (ultraviolet B alone or psoralens plus ultraviolet A), outpatient treatment at a clinic specializing in psoriasis and systemic therapy with oral retinoids, methotrexate (Rheumatrex) or cyclosporine (Sandimmune). Combination therapy has also been shown to be effective, especially phototherapy in combination with topical anthralin, coal tar or calcipotriene (Table 4).

Psoriasis is in simple terms, only a vast acceleration of the usual replacement process of the skin. The epidermis is the uppermost portion of the skin. The epidermis is made up of layers of cells. The epidermis cells gradually change and move to the surface where they are continuously shed and replaced. Normally, a skin cell matures in twenty to thirty days during its passage to the surface where a constant invisible shedding of dead cells and scales takes place.

Nail psoriasis can affect the nails of both the hands and feet. Many changes can occur, for example: thickening, loosening, changes in colour and the appearance of pits (pits are small dents/ice pick like depressions on the surface of the nails).

Cold Sores THE CAUSES OF SCALP PSORIASIS EXPLAINED Scholars believe psoriasis to have been included among the various skin conditions called tzaraath (translated as leprosy) in the Hebrew Bible, a condition imposed as a punishment for slander. The patient was deemed "impure" (see tumah and taharah) during their afflicted phase and is ultimately treated by the kohen. However, it is more likely that this confusion arose from the use of the same Greek term for both conditions. The Greeks used the term lepra (λεπρα) for scaly skin conditions. They used the term psora to describe itchy skin conditions. It became known as Willan's lepra in the late 18th century when English dermatologists Robert Willan and Thomas Bateman differentiated it from other skin diseases. Leprosy, they said, is distinguished by the regular, circular form of patches, while psoriasis is always irregular. Willan identified two categories: leprosa graecorum and psora leprosa.

No more than 100 g should be used each week. Key findings in the affected skin of patients with psoriasis include vascular engorgement due to superficial blood vessel dilation and altered epidermal cell cycle. Epidermal hyperplasia leads to an accelerated cell turnover rate (from 23 d to 3-5 d), leading to improper cell maturation.
Guttate psoriasis symptoms and signs include bumps or small plaques (½ inch or less) of red itchy, scaling skin that may appear explosively, affecting large parts of the skin surface simultaneously, after a sore throat.
1.1 Plaque psoriasis The possibility of acting on intracellular targets has also been the object of study. Inhibition of the JAK/STAT pathway has been appealing, since JAK proteins family play a central role in signal transduction between the lymphocyte cytokine receptor and STAT proteins, involved in the immune responses promoted by lymphocytes.17 Tofacitinib, a JAK1 and JAK3 inhibitor administered orally or topically, and ruxolitinib, a JAK1 and JAK2 topical inhibitor, are the best studied JAK/STAT inhibitors to date.17-19 Inhibition of the cAMP/PKA pathway is also being investigated for the treatment of psoriasis. Inhibitors of phosphodiesterase 4 increase the intracellular levels of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), thus inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators. Apremilast, a small inhibitory molecule specific for phosphodiesterase 4, is representative of this new therapeutic class and has recently been approved for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis.20-21

Video library Psoralen and ultraviolet A phototherapy (PUVA) combines the oral or topical administration of psoralen with exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) light. The mechanism of action of PUVA is unknown, but probably involves activation of psoralen by UVA light, which inhibits the abnormally rapid production of the cells in psoriatic skin. There are multiple mechanisms of action associated with PUVA, including effects on the skin's immune system. PUVA is associated with nausea, headache, fatigue, burning, and itching. Long-term treatment is associated with squamous cell carcinoma (but not with melanoma). A combination therapy for moderate to severe psoriasis using PUVA plus acitretin resulted in benefit, but acitretin use has been associated with birth defects and liver damage.
Some people with scalp psoriasis find relief from itching by mixing up a home remedy of equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water and dabbing the solution on their scalp two to three times a week. However, you should avoid this remedy if your scalp is cracked or bleeding.

Many types of non-biological systemic medicine can be used for psoriasis. Different systemic medicines may be tried at different times and the risks as well as benefits should be considered. Cyclosporine and methotrexate are two non-biological systemic treatments for psoriasis (see also the overview on systemic treatments). Both medicines work in different ways by slowing down the skin cell production and reducing inflammation. They are usually taken as tablets, but can also be given as injections.
