A look into whether or not the word's meaning has evolved over time. There is no cure for psoriasis, that said, there are some new combinations of topical steroids and vitamin D that pack a one-two punch against the inflammation and scaling of psoriasis and are helping people with moderate psoriasis get and stay clear. Taclonex ointment is a once-daily medication for psoriasis that is used for up to eight weeks to treat (and delete) scalp and body plaque psoriasis. (This is also the only FDA-approved treatment for teens with scalp psoriasis, and the once-a-day regimen means teens are more likely to use the ointment as directed.) It also comes as a foam and goes by the name of Enstilar®. The foam formulation may allow people to use it on larger body areas.

Photochemotherapy comprises taking a light-sensitizing medication (psoralen) before exposure to UVA light. UVA light penetrates deeper into the skin than does UVB light, and psoralen makes the skin more responsive to UVA exposure. This more aggressive treatment consistently improves skin and is often used for more-severe cases of psoriasis. PUVA involves two or three treatments a week for a prescribed number of weeks. UVA is often administered in a stand-up booth at a medical clinic or office.

About Psoriatic Arthritis There are many ways to treat psoriasis and what works for one person may not work for another. It is important to keep working with your doctor until you find the treatment plan that reduces or eliminates your symptoms. Since there is currently no cure for psoriasis, the goal is to attain remission (period in the course of a disease when symptoms become less severe or disappear). With each treatment or treatment combination that you try, keep track of the medication and the dosage, keep track of its effects and of any side effects. Ask your doctor how long before you should see a change in your symptoms or know that the treatment is not working effectively for you.

RAISING KIDS Light therapy may be used if topical treatments are not effective. Natural sunlight or ultraviolet light (UVA or UVB) can be used to help clear the skin of psoriasis lesions. Light therapy may be used alone or in combination with medications. Ultraviolet light lessens the growth of plaques, redness, swelling and itching. Methoxsalen (Oxsoralen-Ultra) can be used with UV light also, called PUVA, and is effective in treating larger areas of widespread psoriasis. Laser light (UVB) is also used and can directly target psoriasis and avoid the surrounding skin.

Ample literature suggests that weight loss can help psoriasis, but other attempts to show improvement with more specific diets, such as a gluten-free diet, are less conclusive. Studies of very-low-calorie diets and the “Mediterranean Diet" have both shown improvement in anecdotal reports and small studies. [49, 50] Nutritional supplements have shown limited benefit, with the exception of fish oil. Vitamin D itself has also been reported to be of benefit in small studies. Much more work needs to be done before enthusiastic support of any particular supplement or dietary plan may be offered.
