Wrinkles Further Information Fortunately, this isn’t all that common, but it does occur, says Jerry Bagel, MD, director of the Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey. “Some people may lose clumps of hair, but this hair does grow back in about a month with adequate scalp psoriasis treatment,” he says. “The hair loss may be from scratching and the inflammation of the disease.” This is one of the reasons why so many people with psoriasis are desperate for psoriasis remedies that can ease symptoms. In 1990, psoriasis was the reason for more than 1 million visits to physicians.1 In the past, the treatment of psoriasis was primarily managed by dermatologists; this disorder accounted for only 0.4 percent of skin-related visits to family physicians.2 The number of patients treated by family physicians, however, is likely to have steadily increased as more patients seek medical care of psoriasis from their primary care physicians. Loss of Consciousness in a 50-yr-old Man Biosimilars Armstrong AW We included 59 RCTs with a total of 11,561 participants. Thirty studies were either conducted or sponsored by the manufacturer of the study medication. The risk of bias varied considerably among the included studies. For instance, most authors did not state the randomisation method and few addressed allocation concealment. Most findings were limited to short-term treatments, since most studies were conducted for less than six months. Only one trial investigated long-term therapy (12 months). Although we found a wide variety of different interventions, we limited the grading of the quality of evidence to three major comparisons: steroid versus vitamin D, two-compound combination of steroid and vitamin D versus steroid monotherapy and versus vitamin D. Ophthalmic corticosteroids (eg, prednisolone acetate 1% ophthalmic, dexamethasone ophthalmic) Psoriasis is not an infection and therefore is not contagious. Touching the affected skin and then touching someone else will not transmit psoriasis. Recently, in a retrospective Spanish study of systemic therapies in psoriasis, adverse events of any type were less frequent with biotechnological agents than with conventional systemic therapy, with no age dependent differences. However, severe adverse events were more common in the elderly, probably due to the characteristics of this population and not to the treatment of psoriasis itself. Risk of adverse events with biotechnological therapy was the same for both groups, young adults and elderly. Since biotechnology appears to be safer than conventional therapy, there is a need for further studies to clarify its role in the geriatric population and to demystify its lack of safety. 49 Newsletters Sign Up to Receive Our Free Newsletters Food Nondiscrimination Access for Dermatologists Skin cancer - risk factors Show doctors near me Next Topic: Causes & Triggers »

Hair makes the treatment of scalp psoriasis especially challenging. Vehicle formulations play a large role in patient satisfaction and adherence. Shampoos provide patients with an easy, non-messy treatment option, either alone or in combination with other therapies. Few studies have evaluated the actual efficacy of these preparations, reporting shampoos have a modest, at best, effect on treating psoriasis of the scalp.15 There are some studies available that support the use of coal tar shampoo, containing 2%–10% coal tar solution, in scalp psoriasis;16,17 however, no double-blind studies are available to support this practice and many patients do not find tar shampoos cosmetically acceptable. Salicylic acid shampoo, due to its keratolytic effect, has also been used to enhance the penetration of other topical medications including corticosteroids, and has been recommended by The National Psoriasis Foundation as a first-line therapy.5 However, a recent Cochrane review of clinical trials on scalp psoriasis found no evidence to support the first-line use of a tar-based shampoo, with or without a keratolytic such as salicylic acid.18 Alternatively, clobetasol propionate (CP) shampoo 0.05% has been proven to be highly effective for scalp psoriasis. This formulation has been found to be both safe and efficacious for the initial treatment phase of disease, as well as maintenance therapy to prevent disease relapse once a patient has achieved remission with other topical or systemic therapies (see Topical corticosteroids).19–21 National Psoriasis Foundation: "Symptoms | Types | Treatments | Research | Finding a Cure | Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis."
