It's important to find someone, whether they have psoriasis or not, who will listen and let you express the strong feelings that accompany psoriasis. Your feelings are real. Don't dismiss or trivialise them. The power of the emotions that come from having psoriasis should be not underestimated. Find a dermatologist you can talk to about your feelings and condition. He or she may suggest how to deal with the emotional aspects of psoriasis. You could also talk to your GP or a psoriasis patient support group. These treatments would be most appropriate for those with milder, plaque disease and not for those with pustules, erythroderma or arthritis. Psoriasis itself does not cause hair loss, but your hair can enter a resting stage known as telogen when you are under stress. When too much of your hair goes into telogen at once, fewer hair follicles are available to grow new hair. As a result, you may notice more hair on your hairbrush than usual. That’s another reason why you might want to try keeping your stress levels in check. You may have a single outbreak that goes away on its own, or you may have repeated episodes. Psoriasis has a genetic basis and can be inherited. Some people carry genes that make them more likely to develop psoriasis. Just because a person has genes that would make him more likely to have psoriasis doesn't mean he will have the disease. About one-third of people with psoriasis have at least one family member with the disease. Certain factors trigger psoriasis to flare up in those who have the genes. Dermatology Glossary Sexual Conditions Methotrexate, the oldest systemic therapy for psoriasis, remains one of the most effective treatments for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. It has a number of short term side effects including bone marrow toxicity, nausea, aphthous stomatitis, and development of megaloblastic anaemia. Even when properly prescribed, bone marrow toxicity of methotrexate is responsible for several deaths each year.25 Caution must be used in administering other medications to patients on methotrexate because certain drugs result in higher methotrexate levels. Specifically, co-trimoxazole (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) results in increased methotrexate toxicity by several mechanisms.26 Decreases in renal function lower methotrexate clearance thereby increasing toxicity, and thus methotrexate needs to be used with increased caution in the elderly.27 Certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also interfere with methotrexate secretion.26 Nausea and megaloblastic anaemia of methotrexate can be avoided by concomitant prescription of folic acid (1–5 mg daily) although this may interfere with the efficacy of methotrexate.28 Stronger topical corticosteroids can be prescribed by your doctor and should only be used on small areas of skin or on particularly thick patches. Overusing topical corticosteroids can lead to skin thinning. Systemic therapies Infections, such as strep throat or skin infections R 20.
