Knight J Psoriasis is a chronic autoinflammatory disorder affecting approximately 2% to 4% of the Western population.1 While there is no absolute cure for psoriasis, novel therapies allow for substantial reduction in symptoms and considerable improvement in quality of life (QoL). In the past few years, multiple treatment guidelines (recommendations based on evidence-based literature reviews) and consensus statements (a set of declarations determined and voted on by a panel of experts in the field) have been developed to guide physicians worldwide in treating psoriasis in the clinical setting (eTable).2-10

Prescription or over-the-counter? Spray, ointment or cream? Light treatment or injections? Remember, when you find an effective treatment, it’s important to stick with it. Even if the treatment is not effective immediately, it is still important to stick with it to determine if it is effective. Just because the condition clears does not mean you should stop the therapy. Whatever treatment your doctor prescribes, staying with it may mean longer periods between flares. DO accept that it may take some trial and error to find what works best for you, as a particular treatment may be appropriate for one person but not another. DO get to know the triggers of your psoriasis. Triggers may often include emotional stress, injury to the skin, some types of infections and reaction to certain drugs. Whatever the cause, know which triggers affect you so you can protect yourself and be prepared to deal with them.

Save Preferences • Dr. Cheong Wai Kwong On average, participants with an intermediate monthly household income between €1000 and €2000 found the duration of benefit to be more important compared with those with lower income ( < €1000 per month; β = 0.26; P = .02, Table 4) and viewed the severity of AEs as less important (P = .02 in descriptive analyses, Figure 3A; β = −0.25; P = .03 in regression models, Table 4). Furthermore, participants with intermediate incomes ( €1000- €2000 per month) attached less importance to the treatment delivery method compared with participants with lower income ( β = −0.32; P = .005). Notably, the importance of treatment cost covered by the individual did not differ significantly between income groups (data not shown). When attribute importance was compared between employed and unemployed participants (Figure 3B), employed participants were significantly more concerned about the reversibility of AEs (P = .006; data not shown). Preferences for other attributes were largely independent of the working status.
Normally, new cell formation on the scalp may take weeks. With psoriasis, cells form within days. This makes it difficult for the body to shed the excess cells. As the skin cells build up on the surface of the scalp, they form scaly patches.

Presented by 37. Working at Galderma One of the most common treatment options, topicals, are usually the first medication your doctor will prescribe after you’ve been diagnosed with psoriasis. They come in different forms, like creams, ointments, gels, or foam. Topicals work on top of the skin, where the symptoms appear – not under the skin, where symptoms start. Applying topicals directly on plaques can help slow the growth of skin cells.

Common Adult Conditions Topical treatments are used by 87% of people with severe psoriasis. In cases of mild psoriasis (affecting < 5% of body surface area) they are highly effective. Topical therapies also play an important role in the management of moderate-severe disease because when people use creams and gels, they do not need to use as much medicine or other forms of systemic treatment which have greater side effects and/or are less convenient to use. When used alone, creams and gels are generally not enough to control severe psoriasis.owever the majority of people with severe disease report never having used more intensive photo and systemic therapies.
