Home Treatments for Scalp Psoriasis Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Department of Dermatology, 330 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215, USA Guttate psoriasis is characterized by numerous small, oval (teardrop-shaped) lesions that develop after an acute upper respiratory tract infection. These lesions are often not as scaly or as red as the classic lesions of plaque-type psoriasis. Usually, guttate psoriasis must be differentiated from pityriasis rosea, another condition characterized by the sudden outbreak of red scaly lesions. Compared with pityriasis rosea, psoriatic lesions are thicker and scalier, and the lesions are not usually distributed along skin creases.

Treatment can lessen the formation of the excessive cells and help to return your skin to a smoother appearance. Treatments may include topical creams or lotions, phototherapy (light therapy) with or without certain medications, or prescription drugs that may be taken by mouth or injected. Some injectable medications can be used by the patient at home, too.

Topical treatments such as creams and ointments are usually recommended first, particularly for mild psoriasis. The aim is primarily to slow down and regulate skin cell turnover, reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Topicals are often used in combination with other treatments. Applied to the skin as a lotion, spray, cream, ointment or shampoo, they can slow down cell reproduction and reduce inflammation. Some require a prescription; others don’t. When the disease is more severe, creams are likely to be combined with oral medications or light therapy.
L Vitamin D analogues. These synthetic forms of vitamin D slow skin cell growth. Calcipotriene (Dovonex) is a prescription cream or solution containing a vitamin D analogue that treats mild to moderate psoriasis along with other treatments. Calcipotriene might irritate your skin. Calcitriol (Vectical) is expensive but may be equally effective and possibly less irritating than calcipotriene.

Scalp psoriasis: When psoriasis forms on the scalp, it can creep beyond the scalp. The relationship between socioeconomic status and treatment preferences appears to be more complex. According to our results, participants with intermediate household incomes ( €1000- €2000 per month), mostly belonging to the working class, attach great importance to long-lasting improvement. To achieve improvement, they are more willing to risk AEs than are participants with lower household incomes ( < €1000 per month) who are likely in Germany to be supported by social benefits. Psoriasis is known to have a negative effect on individuals' professional life and employment status.5,42 Therefore, individuals who are employed in moderate-income occupations may be more likely to demonstrate preferences for treatment compatible with work constraints, ie, a treatment with long-lasting benefit that minimizes time lost from an hourly wage job. In descriptive analyses, we also observed the tendency that participants with a monthly income of more than €1000 care more about the probability of benefit than do those with an income below that level (Figure 3A). The same applies to participants who are working compared with those who are homemakers, unemployed, or retired (Figure 3B). Although differences were not significant, our findings may indicate that individuals with an occupation attach greater importance to appearance, possibly because of expectations at work and from society. Remarkably, and in accordance with previous willingness-to-pay analyses in psoriasis,21,22 income was not a predictor for the effect of individual cost on preferences. Cost to be covered by the individual was the process attribute regarded as least important, ie, participants were prepared to trade copayments for more convenient treatment modalities independent of their income.

Excimer lasers or pulsed dye lasers are used in laser therapy. A pulsed dye laser will create a concentrated beam of yellow light. When this light hits the skin, it converts to heat. The heat then destroys the extra blood vessels in the skin that contribute to psoriasis. Excimer lasers will deliver ultraviolet light to localized areas of the skin that help treat psoriasis. These lasers produce UV light in wavelengths similar to narrow-band UVB. Laser therapy uses intense doses of laser light to help control areas of mild to moderate psoriasis without damaging surrounding healthy skin. These can be quite effective for small plaques of psoriasis, but since only small areas of skin can be treated at once, they are not practical for extensive disease.
The two-compound combination as well as corticosteroid monotherapy were more effective and safer than vitamin D monotherapy. Given the similar safety profile and only slim benefit of the two-compound combination over the steroid alone, monotherapy with generic topical steroids may be fully acceptable for short-term therapy.
