Dithranol Research & Reviews in Electrochemistry Journal of Remote Sensing & GIS Open Access Journal Given that many insurance formularies primarily cover traditional systemic therapies and that MTX and phototherapy are generally well tolerated and cost effective, patients may need to be treated with traditional agents before escalating to biologics. Prior to starting treatment with any biologic, patients should typically be screened for tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficiency virus infection, and immunization for, exposure to, and/or infection with hepatitis B and C virus, and any other active infections. In patients who do not demonstrate hepatitis immunity, the hepatitis B vaccine should be administered prior to starting treatment with a biologic.14 In psoriasis patients with latent TB, 2 months of treatment should be completed before initiating biologic therapy8; once a biologic has been initiated, all patients should be screened annually for TB.

UV light therapy Br J Dermatol. 2012; 166: 474-482 Certain medications (this is rare) Overactive T cells also trigger increased production of healthy skin cells, more T cells and other white blood cells, especially neutrophils. These travel into the skin causing redness and sometimes pus in pustular lesions. Dilated blood vessels in psoriasis-affected areas create warmth and redness in the skin lesions.
There are many home remedies that can be used in the treatment of psoriasis. It is very important to keep the skin moist to avoid dryness. Petroleum jelly, shortening, or olive oil can be used as a moisturizer. Take fewer showers and baths to avoid stripping the skin of its natural oils. Adding salts, oil, or finely ground oatmeal to the bath can soothe the skin. Heliotherapy (medicinal sunbathing) can be effective in controlling psoriasis. There is also evidence that increased body mass is associated with psoriasis and that heavier individuals are more difficult to treat.

Skin Cancers Phototherapy uses natural and artificial light to treat psoriasis. Artificial light therapy can be given in hospitals and some specialist centres, usually under the care of a dermatologist. These treatments are not the same as using a sunbed.

Multiple types of psoriasis are identified, with plaque-type psoriasis, also known as discoid psoriasis, being the most common type. Plaque psoriasis usually presents with plaques on the scalp, trunk, and limbs (see the image below). These plaques appear as focal, raised, inflamed, edematous lesions covered with silvery-white “micaceous” scales. (See Clinical Presentation.)

The Goeckerman regimen uses coal tar followed by UV-B exposure and has been shown to produce improvement in more than 80% of patients. The odor of coal tar limits its popularity. The treatments involve twice-a-day light exposure plus daily application of the tar preparation for two to four weeks. This is no small commitment and either requires hospitalization or using a psoriasis day-care treatment center.
Alternative therapies 13. Smith CH See Clinical Presentation for more detail. Curcumin is the active ingredient found in the spice turmeric. It may reduce inflammation in the body. A study in the journal Biochimie found it had a positive effect on psoriasis symptoms in mice. Curcumin is available in pill or capsule form in many health food stores.
