For general plaque psoriasis, common tools include the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), the Physician Global Assessment (PGA) or Body Surface Area (BSA) scores.10,11 The most commonly employed tools for scalp psoriasis are modifications of the PASI: the Psoriasis Scalp Severity Index (PSSI), the Scalp-modified PASI, and the scalp PGA (ScPGA). Unlike the PASI, which evaluates disease severity on four distinct body surface areas, these indexes take into account erythema, induration, and desquamation of disease affecting the scalp only. Other instruments exist but are less commonly employed.11,12 There are also patient self-assessment tools that have been developed, including the Dermatology Life Quality Index as well as the Scalpdex, a quality-of-life instrument that addresses symptoms as well as disease impact.12–14 Together, these tools can be used not only to assess symptomatology, but also guide treatment choices and evaluate patient response on a variety of indicators.

Ways to get healthier looking skin by boosting collagen levels Collagen is a protein that is found throughout the body. One of its functions is to help skin cells renew and repair themselves. Collagen intake can be increased through eating certain foods, such as citrus fruits. Topical creams with collagen are unlikely to work, as the molecules are too big to pass through the skin. Use moisturizer. After bathing, apply a heavy, ointment-based moisturizer while your skin is still moist. For very dry skin, oils may be preferable — they have more staying power than creams or lotions do and are more effective at preventing water from evaporating from your skin. During cold, dry weather, you may need to apply a moisturizer several times a day.

Psoriasis often develops between the ages of 15 and 35, but it can develop at any age. About 10 to 15 percent of those with psoriasis get it before age 10. Some infants have psoriasis, although this is considered rare.
Inflammation Trains the Skin to Heal Faster Browse all Your comments Annual Report Every year, roughly 20,000 children under 10 years of age are diagnosed with psoriasis. Sometimes it is misdiagnosed because it is confused with other skin diseases. Symptoms include pitting and discoloration of the nails, severe scalp scaling, diaper dermatitis or plaques similar to that of adult psoriasis on the trunk and extremities. Psoriasis in infants is uncommon, but it does occur. Only close observation can determine if an infant has the disease.

Men's health TIA and Minor Stroke If the scalp is involved as part of severe psoriasis deemed too extensive to be treated practically with topical medications, then medications delivered orally or by injection may be necessary. All these medications comprise more risk when compared to topical medication. They include oral drugs like methotrexate (Rheumatrex, Trexall), cyclosporine (Sandimmune), acitretin (Soriatane), apremilast (Otezla), and some of the so-called biological drugs that are administered by infusion into a vein (infliximab [Remicade]) or by injection into the deeper layers of the skin like etanercept (Enbrel), adalimumab (Humira), ustekinumab (Stelara), secukinumab (Cosentyx), and ixekizumab (Taltz). Regular laboratory work may be necessary to monitor for the toxicities associated with some of these systemic therapies.

Design A computer-based conjoint analysis experiment was conducted to analyze the preferences of individuals with moderate or severe psoriasis for outcome attributes (probability, magnitude, and duration of benefit, as well as probability, severity, and reversibility of adverse effects) and process attributes (treatment location, frequency, duration, delivery method, and individual cost) of psoriasis treatments. Relative importance scores (RISs) for each attribute were calculated. The effect of sociodemographic (age, sex, and marital status) and socioeconomic (income and employment) characteristics and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index and Dermatology Life Quality Index scores on preferences was assessed using analysis of variance, post hoc testing, and multivariate regression analysis.

Despite the vast array of treatment options available for psoriasis, psoriasis of the scalp remains a difficult treatment area. The presence of hair not only impacts the application and penetration of medications to affected areas, but also strongly influences treatment adherence. Patients commonly complain of the greasy effect of medications in this area, and difficulty removing products from their hair. Currently, topical medications are recommended as a first line of treatment in mild-to-moderate psoriasis but can also be used concomitantly with phototherapy, systemic or biological therapies for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Topical corticosteroids, with or without the addition of the vitamin D analog calcipotriol, are the gold standard for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Importantly, in recent years, there have been a number of new formulations introduced to the market (eg, foams, shampoos, and sprays) that enhance cosmetic acceptability and adherence. In severe or recalcitrant cases, systemic treatment should be considered.
