UV light can treat large areas of skin with few side effects, if performed in the physician's office. It should be kept in mind that all UV light causes mutational events, which can lead to skin cancer. At this time, the most popular type of UV light for psoriasis is called narrow-band UVB. Only a small portion of the UV light spectrum is used, which seems to be particularly beneficial for psoriasis and may be less carcinogenic. This UVB is quite different from the UVA, the wavelength available in tanning salons, which is not effective in psoriasis. Phototherapy can be used alone or with medications when treating psoriasis. Tell us your profession or specialty Fee schedule Published: 02 August 1997 Commentary Formats: Topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed treatment for psoriasis.5 They are available in ointment, cream, lotion and solution forms. Corticosteroids have well-recognized anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects, which are thought to be their primary mechanism of action in psoriasis.6  Topical steroids are classified as low-, medium-, high- and super-high potency agents (Table 2). In general, treatment is initiated with a medium-strength agent, and high-potency agents are reserved for the treatment of thick chronic plaques that are refractory to weaker steroids. Low-potency agents are used on the face, on areas where the skin tends to be thinner, and on the groin and axillary areas, where natural occlusion increases the potency of a low-potency agent to the equivalent of a higher potency agent. Use of high-potency agents in these areas increases the risk of side effects and therefore should be avoided. Scalp psoriasis runs the gamut from mild to severe, and psoriasis scalp can extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead, the back of the neck, and around your ears. There are some foods that can worsen it. These patches normally appear on your elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but can appear anywhere on your body. Most people are only affected with small patches. In some cases, the patches can be itchy or sore.
