There were no significant changes in mean serum calcium, parathyroid hormone or urinary calcium/creatinine ratio.38 Monday, February 20, 2017 What causes Psoriasis? Apremilast, an oral PDE4 inhibitor, has been studied in three Phase 3 studies. Two pivotal trials, ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, have reported significant improvement in scalp psoriasis.47 The studies included patients with moderate-to-very severe scalp psoriasis (ScPGA ≥3) at baseline. The study design included a 16-week placebo-controlled period in which patients were randomized to apremilast 30 mg twice daily or placebo. At 16 weeks, the percentage of patients who achieved an ScPGA score of 0 (clear) or 1 (minimal) was significantly greater in the apremilast group (46.5% versus 17.5% in ESTEEM 1; 40.9% versus 17.2% in ESTEEM 2; P<0.0001 for both).47 During the open-label period, all patients received apremilast 30 mg twice daily from week 16 to week 32. In those patients who received apremilast from baseline, 37.4% and 32.4% of patients achieved an ScPGA score of 0 or 1 (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively). Of the patients initially randomized to placebo who switched to apremilast at week 16, 43.6% and 50.7% achieved an improvement in ScPGA score to 0 or 1 at week 32 (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively). By the end of week 52, in all patients who were PASI responders, an ScPGA of 0 or 1 was maintained in 83.3% and 62.5% of patients receiving apremilast (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively) and in 64.1% and 53.3% of those initially started on placebo and receiving apremilast in the open-label period only (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively).47 Drug Basics & Safety Source: Adapted from Balato et al., 2014.48 Others Table 1. Journal of Diagnostic Techniques and Biomedical Analysis Hybrid Open Access Journal When other treatments fail, some doctors prescribe oral or injectable drugs to treat psoriasis. Some of these medications affect the immune system. One such medication, methotrexate (also used as a chemotherapy drug for cancer and for various forms of arthritis), can produce dramatic clearing of the psoriasis lesions. However, it can cause side effects, so the prescribing doctor should perform regular blood tests. Another medication of this type is cyclosporine. Home Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a procedure that treats precancerous cells, in addition to other types of cancer cells. The medical treatment does this with the help of a photosensitizing drug and a light source that activates the applied drug, destroying cancer cells. PDT is approved to treat non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and Barrett's esophagus. It's used to treat actinic keratosis, as well as acne, rosacea, skin cancer, sun damage, oily skin, wrinkles, warts, psoriasis, and enlarged sebaceous glands. They may also appear on distant parts of the body. Sensitive Scalp Cystic Fibrosis The only type of psoriasis that affects the scalp, however, is plaque psoriasis.

Symptoms can include hives, itchy skin, and watery eyes after contact with a dog. Home remedies and medicines can help get rid of some symptoms, especially mild itching and redness, so a person with mild dog allergies may still be able to live with a dog. Read now Follansbee MR The treatment of psoriasis depends on its severity and location, and can be divided into four main categories: topical treatments (creams or ointments applied directly to the skin), ultraviolet light therapy (also called phototherapy, delivered in hospital dermatology departments), systemic medications (medicines that work inside your body) or biologic treatments (medicines based on compounds made by living cells). The use of emollients and soap substitutes also form an integral part of treatment. They are called psoriasis susceptibility 1 through 9 (PSORS1 through PSORS9). Within those loci are genes on pathways that lead to inflammation. Certain variations (mutations) of those genes are commonly found in psoriasis.[30] Genome-wide association scans have identified other genes that are altered to characteristic variants in psoriasis. Some of these genes express inflammatory signal proteins, which affect cells in the immune system that are also involved in psoriasis. Some of these genes are also involved in other autoimmune diseases.[30] Scalp psoriasis. (n.d.).
