Cheilitis, characterised by fissuring and cracking of the lips, is common as are several other cutaneous side effects. A sticky sensation to the skin, desquamation of the palms and soles, thinning of the nail plates, and development of pyogenic granulomas in paronychial areas can occur. Elevation of cholesterol levels, and especially triglycerides, is common even at lower doses of etretinate or acitretin. Triglycerides can become so elevated that pancreatitis can occur. Muscle aches and pains are also common. Elevation of liver function tests occurs in a small proportion of patients and must be monitored.
