Most people with moderate to severe psoriasis will benefit from a combination of treatments. This type of therapy uses more than one of the treatment types to reduce symptoms. Some people may use the same treatment their entire lives. Others may need to change treatments occasionally if their skin stops responding to what they’re using. People with psoriasis may be too embarrassed to participate in summer recreation activities which require the removal of clothing, such as swimming and other sports. In one study, a large proportion of people with psoriasis reported avoiding swimming and/or other sporting activities as a result of their condition. 64% reported that they avoided buying summer clothes such as short sleeved shirts, summer dresses and/or shorts. Wearing seasonally inappropriate clothing (e.g. long sleeves in summer) in an attempt to hide psoriatic skin rash is one measure people resort to in order to hide their condition. However, this strategy is also likely to draw unwanted attention. Rash may appear very quickly Moisturizers Hives (urticaria) is a reaction to the release of histamine into the skin... Psoriasis of the scalp is a common yet difficult condition to treat. Overlying dense hair, inaccessibility to UV exposure, and noncompliance with treatment that often involves messy, malodorous topical medications are factors that frequently limit therapeutic success. Psoriasis of the scalp often brings patients to dermatologists because of itching, scaling, hair loss, and bleeding.1 Topical medications, such as tar shampoos, steroid solutions, and oils, have been the mainstays of the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Unfortunately, some patients simply do not respond to this form of therapy, and compliance requires a lot of time and motivation. Aside from topical medications, few treatment modalities exist for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Phototherapy, while excellent for body psoriasis, proves relatively ineffective for the scalp in patients without closely shaved heads, because the hair causes mechanical hindrance for light access. Even when traditional phototherapy can be used for the treatment of scalp psoriasis, noninvolved areas of the scalp and face are often inadvertently exposed. Systemic therapies that are used to control psoriatic lesions elsewhere on the body will improve scalp lesions but are rarely indicated solely for scalp psoriasis.2 It is clear that new and innovative treatment modalities are required for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. [PubMed] McCord recommends a team approach to treating psoriasis. Patients, families and their health care providers need to work together to address the multiple diseases that may occur in association with psoriasis, including the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (the occurrence of obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes in one patient), lymphoma, heart disease and/or depression. “We do not completely understand the relationship of these co-morbidities to psoriasis, but it is an area of active research,” she adds. That's over 125 million people worldwide who have to tolerate pain from cracking and bleeding skin, as well as embarrassment from continually shedding scales of skin. Van den Reek et al. evaluated, prospectively, the satisfaction with biological treatment (adalimumab, etanercept and ustekinumab) in a routine follow-up, observing significant improvements in the four domains of the questionnaire used (effectiveness, toxicity, convenience and overall satisfaction) at 3 and 6 months of treatment (all p≤0.02). The authors demonstrated that the "effectiveness" domain is the most likely to improve, in a manner consistent with what had previously been described, and therefore conclude that, in order to overcome the need for satisfaction, more effective therapies will have to be available.68 Eye Wikimedia Commons has media related to Psoriasis. [PubMed] The effect of sociodemographic, socioeconomic, and disease-related factors on treatment preferences was estimated in descriptive analyses (Figures 2, 3, and 4) and multivariate logistic regression models (Table 4). When participants were stratified according to sex (Figure 2A, Table 4) and marital status (Figure 2C, Table 4), no significant differences were found. However, when different age groups were compared, it was striking that, on average, older participants ( ≥65 years) found the probability of benefit to be less important than younger participants did (Figure 2B). This finding was confirmed in our regression analysis ( β  =   –0.24; P  =  .005, Table 4).
