Odd Creatures Psoriasis can occur on any area of the body, including hands, feet, elbows, scalp or genitals. In plaque psoriasis, the most common form of psoriasis, the skin tends to be dry, flaky, itchy, red and covered with white scales.
Both acitretin and etretinate are associated with numerous mucocutaneous side effects. At doses of 1 mg/kg daily, many patients develop hair loss. Cheilitis, characterised by fissuring and cracking of the lips, is common as are several other cutaneous side effects. A sticky sensation to the skin, desquamation of the palms and soles, thinning of the nail plates, and development of pyogenic granulomas in paronychial areas can occur. Elevation of cholesterol levels, and especially triglycerides, is common even at lower doses of etretinate or acitretin. Triglycerides can become so elevated that pancreatitis can occur. Muscle aches and pains are also common. Elevation of liver function tests occurs in a small proportion of patients and must be monitored.

Typical ultraviolet (UV) therapy, including narrowband UVB or Psoralen UVA (PUVA) therapy is not practical for the scalp. Modalities to enhance delivery, such as UVB comb, have been developed and tested. In one trial, 14 subjects were treated with a fiber-optic UVB comb three times weekly for 12 weeks, with an area of scalp reserved as a control site. In this study, the treatment sites showed a mean improvement in the modified PASI score of 3.6, with a difference in mean modified PASI between the treatment and control sites of 3.9 (P<0.0001).57

4 Proven Ways to Treat Psoriasis View all 24 services For most kids, psoriasis is limited to just a few patches that usually respond well to treatment. More serious cases might need more aggressive treatment. But the good news is that there are many options. If one treatment doesn't work, another probably will.
Solar or therapeutic ultraviolet (UV) radiation may be helpful. Various UV light treatments are used—now most commonly, UVB, although psoralen + UVB (PUVA) is still used. Among phototherapy options, Section 5 (2010) of the AAD guideline gives the highest recommendation to oral PUVA or a combination of PUVA and topical agents.
Naturopathic Therapies Clinic I've had scalp psoriasis for as long as I can remember. My parents tried many different treatments, from coal tar-based products to corticosteroids. None of them worked very well and some stunk horribly!

Your child may go through life with their condition not even bothering them or flaring up, and only have the tiniest of patches somewhere on their bodies. However, there may be times when the psoriasis flares, or you just need some additional information to help answer their questions – so this website and information is a guide to help you when needed, but should not be a substitute for professional medical advice.

Worsening of a long-term erythematous scaly area One of the best things a parent can do for their child from an early age, or when they first get psoriasis is educate their children about the condition, answer any questions or worries they have as they arise, reassure them on a regular basis, take an interest in how they feel, monitor their psoriasis in a discreet way so not to make a big issue of it. Reassure them that there is much research going on to find a cure and easier, more effective treatments to use with better, longer outcomes of remission. It is not a contagious condition and that their friends, boyfriends and girlfriends will not catch it. Encourage them to talk openly about their condition and not to hide it.
Right now there is no cure for psoriasis. The disease can go into remission where there are no symptoms or signs present. Current research is underway for better treatments and a possible cure.
