What you need to know about your child’s psoriasis PUVA Topical treatments such as creams and ointments are usually recommended first, particularly for mild psoriasis. The aim is primarily to slow down and regulate skin cell turnover, reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. Topicals are often used in combination with other treatments. Applied to the skin as a lotion, spray, cream, ointment or shampoo, they can slow down cell reproduction and reduce inflammation. Some require a prescription; others don’t. When the disease is more severe, creams are likely to be combined with oral medications or light therapy.

Castrillo JMA Dietary modifications may reduce the severity of psoriatic rash; however, evidence is limited. As the condition is underpinned by inflammation, an anti-inflammatory diet may be of benefit. Such a diet is based on the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains, legumes, and fresh fruit and vegetables and avoidance of omega-6, saturated and trans fats and processed foods. It should also include the use of spices with anti-inflammatory properties such as ginger, cumin, basil and turmeric.

There is no clear link between what you eat and severity of the psoriasis symptoms. A healthy diet is important for well-being and can reduce your child's risk of many long term illnesses. If you are worried about your child's diet then talk to your doctor.
Subtypes of Psoriasis USA & Americas There are five main types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular, and erythrodermic. Plaque psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris, makes up about 90 percent of cases. It typically presents as red patches with white scales on top. Areas of the body most commonly affected are the back of the forearms, shins, navel area, and scalp. Guttate psoriasis has drop-shaped lesions. Pustular psoriasis presents as small non-infectious pus-filled blisters. Inverse psoriasis forms red patches in skin folds. Erythrodermic psoriasis occurs when the rash becomes very widespread, and can develop from any of the other types. Fingernails and toenails are affected in most people with psoriasis at some point in time. This may include pits in the nails or changes in nail color.
Dandruff and scalp psoriasis can be sometimes difficult to distinguish. Both are common conditions that affect the scalp and they may share similar symptoms (e.g. itch, redness and scaling). The following table may help you to distinguish between these two conditions by visually examining your and dandruff. However, telling the difference can be difficult. If you’re in doubt about whether your dandruff may indicate scalp psoriasis scaling, talk to your doctor.

The procedure is done under medical supervision and may be advised when topicals alone are not effective. A dermatologist will know if this treatment is right for you. Exposure tosunlight and water can help, too. The sun’s ultraviolet rays slow the growth of skin cells and water helps soften lesions.
