His only warning is to be wary of shampoos containing coal tar, as they can be messy on stain towels and/or clothing. He also advises against using them if you're pregnant, as coal tar is supposedly teratogenic, which means it could be bad for developing babies.

People with psoriasis may be too embarrassed to participate in summer recreation activities which require the removal of clothing, such as swimming and other sports. In one study, a large proportion of people with psoriasis reported avoiding swimming and/or other sporting activities as a result of their condition. 64% reported that they avoided buying summer clothes such as short sleeved shirts, summer dresses and/or shorts. Wearing seasonally inappropriate clothing (e.g. long sleeves in summer) in an attempt to hide psoriatic skin rash is one measure people resort to in order to hide their condition. However, this strategy is also likely to draw unwanted attention.

Surgery Cuts, scratches or sunburns. While the clinical presentation of psoriasis, and whatever improvements are made during therapy, is usually measured using the PASI (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) score, measurement of the effect on the quality of life of the psoriasis patient may be better assessed by the DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index) or the CDLQI (Children’s Dermatology Life Quality Index). Measurements using these tools generally show improved quality of life with more aggressive treatment such as systemic agents. [26, 27]

Biological therapy has revolutionized moderate to severe psoriasis treatment. However, despite being more effective than conventional systemic treatments, some patients do not respond or lose response to biotechnological treatments or develop drug-antibodies, interfering with its safety and efficacy. There are also clinical forms of the disease and patient profiles for which is pending further scientific evidence for more sustained therapeutic interventions. The continuous and more detailed knowledge of psoriasis pathophysiology has allowed identifying new therapeutic targets, which is expected to help overcome the challenges of individualized psoriasis treatment.

Acitretin appears more effective than isotretinoin in psoriasis and does not require enrollment in the IPledge program. On the other hand, there is a 3-year pregnancy prohibition after its use, and many will not use this medication in any patient capable of ever becoming pregnant. Combination therapies, such as a biologic plus another immunosuppressive medication, have been used with good effect but data detailing the safest way to do this are scant. All of the systemic medications except acitretin may increase the risk of infection.
Even though topical corticosteroids such as creams or ointments are applied to the surface of the skin, they can still cause side effects. Long-term use or excessive use can lead to thinning of the skin, irritation, dryness, or changes in skin color. If your doctor recommends that you occlude your psoriasis areas -- wrapping them in plastic after applying a topical corticosteroid to boost the effect -- side effects may be more common.
