Supplements Certain medications, such as lithium, beta blockers, and anti-malarials, have been reported to aggravate psoriasis symptoms. To prevent this from happening, ensure that your doctors knows that you have psoriasis (even if you haven’t had any symptoms in years). Stopping some medicines abruptly can also lead to flare-ups, so be sure to talk to your doctor about the best way to taper off a medication and when it’s appropriate to do so.

You may have blood tests to rule out other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and X-rays of the affected joints may be taken.

Results The attribute considered to be most important in patients' preferences for psoriasis treatments was treatment location (RIS, 26.76), followed by probability of benefit (RIS, 23.77) and method of delivery (RIS, 23.49). The RISs for all process attributes were higher than for adverse effect –related attributes. Older individuals ( ≥65 years) were less concerned about the probability of benefit ( β = −0.24; P = .005) compared with younger individuals.

Older topical remedies of psoriasis such as anthralin and coal tar are still in use. Because they are somewhat unpleasant to use, especially due to odour, product migration, and local irritation, they are less commonly prescribed than the aforementioned topical medications. Keratolytic preparations such as those containing salicylic acid and emollients are also effective for removing the excess scale that troubles many patients with psoriasis.
The severity of psoriasis is decided by how much of the body it affects. Mild psoriasis affects less than 3 percent of the body, while moderate psoriasis affects between 3 and 10 percent of the body. Severe psoriasis is when more than 10 percent of the body is covered.

1.3 Psoriatic arthritis 1.5 Medical signs Cancer: Testicular Psoralen and ultraviolet A phototherapy (PUVA) combines the oral or topical administration of psoralen with exposure to ultraviolet A (UVA) light. The mechanism of action of PUVA is unknown, but probably involves activation of psoralen by UVA light, which inhibits the abnormally rapid production of the cells in psoriatic skin. There are multiple mechanisms of action associated with PUVA, including effects on the skin's immune system. PUVA is associated with nausea, headache, fatigue, burning, and itching. Long-term treatment is associated with squamous cell carcinoma (but not with melanoma). A combination therapy for moderate to severe psoriasis using PUVA plus acitretin resulted in benefit, but acitretin use has been associated with birth defects and liver damage.
