Video Transcript Oral or injected medications Selection criteria:  Excimer lasers or pulsed dye lasers are used in laser therapy. A pulsed dye laser will create a concentrated beam of yellow light. When this light hits the skin, it converts to heat. The heat then destroys the extra blood vessels in the skin that contribute to psoriasis. Excimer lasers will deliver ultraviolet light to localized areas of the skin that help treat psoriasis. These lasers produce UV light in wavelengths similar to narrow-band UVB. Laser therapy uses intense doses of laser light to help control areas of mild to moderate psoriasis without damaging surrounding healthy skin. These can be quite effective for small plaques of psoriasis, but since only small areas of skin can be treated at once, they are not practical for extensive disease. Psoriasis has environmental and genetic components. It is more common in adults and can run in families. What triggers it? A virus? Bacteria? Stress? Other environmental factors? “We just don’t know,” McCord says. Superior results in skin clearance compared with Humira (adalimumab) were shown at weeks 16, 24 and 48. Common side effects may include lung infections, headache, reactions at the injection site, and joint pain, among others. Your doctor may recommend creams, ultraviolet light therapy, prescription medications, shots, or some combination of these treatments.

Usually, this is on the soles of the feet or the palms and fingertips. Sometimes, though, it covers large areas of the body. This is known as generalized pustular psoriasis, and can sometimes be accompanied by fever, chills, severe itching, and fatigue. Although doctors choose treatments based on the type and severity of psoriasis and the areas of skin affected, the traditional approach is to start with the mildest treatments — topical creams and ultraviolet light therapy (phototherapy) — in those patients with typical skin lesions (plaques) and then progress to stronger ones only if necessary. Patients with pustular or erythrodermic psoriasis or associated arthritis usually need systemic therapy from the beginning of treatment. The goal is to find the most effective way to slow cell turnover with the fewest possible side effects. Have an account?
