Calcipotriene (Dovonex) is a prescription cream or solution containing a vitamin D analogue that treats mild to moderate psoriasis along with other treatments. Calcipotriene might irritate your skin. Calcitriol (Vectical) is expensive but may be equally effective and possibly less irritating than calcipotriene. Vitamin D analogues are used to help control overactive skin cell production by binding to the vitamin D receptors on the skin cells. Topical vitamin D analogues such as calcipotriene (Dovonex, Sorilux) and calcitriol (Vectical) are effective at slowing the growth of the skin cells and can be used with emollients and topical corticosteroids applied to the skin. Calcipotriene with betamethasone (Taclonex, Enstilar) is a vitamin D analogue that is already combined with a corticosteroid. Long-term use or excessive use can lead to thinning of the skin, irritation, dryness, or changes in skin color. If your doctor recommends that you occlude your psoriasis areas -- wrapping them in plastic after applying a topical corticosteroid to boost the effect -- side effects may be more common. Topical corticosteroids (steroids, such as hydrocortisone) are very useful and often the first-line treatment for limited or small areas of psoriasis. These come in many preparations, including sprays, liquid, creams, gels, ointments, and foams. Steroids come in many different strengths, including stronger ones that are used for elbows, knees, and tougher skin areas and milder ones for areas like the face, underarms, and groin. These are usually applied once or twice a day to affected skin areas. Strong steroid preparations should be limited in use. Overuse or prolonged use may cause problems, including potential permanent skin thinning and damage called atrophy. A monoclonal antibody against IL-17a, ixekizumab, was analyzed in a post hoc analysis of the Phase 2 trial to determine the effect on scalp psoriasis.55 A total of 105/142 (74%) patients enrolled in the Phase 2 program had scalp involvement with a mean baseline PSSI of 18.7 (SD 14.1). At week 12, the percentage improvement of PSSI from baseline was 87.1% (25 mg), 94.8% (75 mg), and 84.8% (150 mg) compared to 30.5% (placebo). By week 20, a PSSI of 0, or clear, was achieved in 58.3%, 66.7%, and 86.4% of patients receiving ixekizumab (25 mg, 75 mg, and 150 mg, respectively) compared to only 10% in the placebo group. At the end of the open-label period at week 48, all patients were receiving ixekizumab 120 mg every 4 weeks, and 78% of all patients had a PSSI of 0.55 Reboussin DM Oil drop sign (or salmon spot): well-circumscribed, yellow-reddish discoloration of the nail What are the signs and symptoms of psoriasis?  Most watched News videos All Rights Reserved © 2013 by Fred Cicetti Toll free: 888-INFO-FDA (888-463-6332) and it tends to run in families.
