It may be used in males and females who are not pregnant and not planning to become pregnant for at least three years. The major side effects include dryness of skin and eyes and temporarily elevated levels of triglycerides and cholesterol (fatty substance) in the blood. Blood tests are generally required before starting this therapy and are needed periodically to monitor triglyceride levels. Patients should not become pregnant while on this drug and usually avoid becoming pregnant for at least three years after stopping this medication.
We expressed the results of the single studies as risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for dichotomous outcomes, and mean differences (MD) with 95% CI for continuous outcomes. If studies were sufficiently homogeneous, we meta-analysed the data by using the random-effects model. Where it was not possible to calculate a point estimate for a single study, we described the data qualitatively. We also presented the number needed to treat to benefit (NNTB).
Martin DA Compare Drugs Children’s Health Vitamin D analogues are used to help control overactive skin cell production by binding to the vitamin D receptors on the skin cells. Topical vitamin D analogues such as calcipotriene (Dovonex, Sorilux) and calcitriol (Vectical) are effective at slowing the growth of the skin cells and can be used with emollients and topical corticosteroids applied to the skin. Calcipotriene with betamethasone (Taclonex, Enstilar) is a vitamin D analogue that is already combined with a corticosteroid.
There are lots of ways to treat psoriasis. Different treatments work for different people, so doctors often try a few to find the one that works best:

What Meningitis Does to Your Body CFS in young people (in ‘Long term health conditions’) (Young People) Several objective measures exist to help quantify the severity of scalp psoriasis. For general plaque psoriasis, common tools include the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), the Physician Global Assessment (PGA) or Body Surface Area (BSA) scores.10,11 The most commonly employed tools for scalp psoriasis are modifications of the PASI: the Psoriasis Scalp Severity Index (PSSI), the Scalp-modified PASI, and the scalp PGA (ScPGA). Unlike the PASI, which evaluates disease severity on four distinct body surface areas, these indexes take into account erythema, induration, and desquamation of disease affecting the scalp only. Other instruments exist but are less commonly employed.11,12 There are also patient self-assessment tools that have been developed, including the Dermatology Life Quality Index as well as the Scalpdex, a quality-of-life instrument that addresses symptoms as well as disease impact.12–14 Together, these tools can be used not only to assess symptomatology, but also guide treatment choices and evaluate patient response on a variety of indicators.
Coal Tar Arch Dermatol. 1994; 130: 216-224 Download Hi-res image Numerous additional drugs have been used off-label for psoriasis. Hydroxyurea, azathioprine, sulfasalazine, oral FK-506, and 6-thioguanine have all been used effectively to treat psoriasis when other treatments have failed. With the advent of biological agents, many of the systemic therapies currently used for psoriasis will continue to be prescribed in combination therapy or as monotherapy depending on the particular circumstances of each patient.

STOMP We included 59 RCTs with a total of 11,561 participants. Thirty studies were either conducted or sponsored by the manufacturer of the study medication. The risk of bias varied considerably among the included studies. For instance, most authors did not state the randomisation method and few addressed allocation concealment. Most findings were limited to short-term treatments, since most studies were conducted for less than six months. Only one trial investigated long-term therapy (12 months). Although we found a wide variety of different interventions, we limited the grading of the quality of evidence to three major comparisons: steroid versus vitamin D, two-compound combination of steroid and vitamin D versus steroid monotherapy and versus vitamin D.

European guidelines for biologic treatment recommend that complete blood count and liver and renal function be evaluated at baseline, at months 1 and 3 of treatment, and then every 3 to 6 months thereafter while on the biologic agent.7 These recommendations are more stringent than those indicated in regulatory labeling and, based on the continual accumulation of data regarding the safety of these agents, some investigators have argued that laboratory testing might not be necessary at all.15

Aches and Pains Light therapy (phototherapy) involves using natural or artificial ultraviolet (UV) light to treat the psoriasis symptoms. A doctor may recommend brief daily exposure to the sun, but too much sunlight can make psoriasis worse. More aggressive forms of light therapy include using controlled doses of UV light on the affected skin, laser therapy, and therapies that combine UV light with medicines and topical treatments.
