Dandruff and scalp psoriasis can be sometimes difficult to distinguish. Both are common conditions that affect the scalp and they may share similar symptoms (e.g. itch, redness and scaling). The following table may help you to distinguish between these two conditions by visually examining your and dandruff. However, telling the difference can be difficult. If you’re in doubt about whether your dandruff may indicate scalp psoriasis scaling, talk to your doctor.
Hives Psoriasis appears as a small bump, a papule, surmounted by scale. When these papules coalesce, a plaque is formed that is often covered by thick layers of horny scale. When this scale is shed, it appears as dandruff, which can be quite unsightly. Scratching these plaques, either because of itching or because of the impulse to remove it, is a very poor idea because of what is called the Koebner phenomenon (also known as the Koebner response or isomorphic response). This may cause psoriasis to develop in areas of inflammation and trauma. Scratching off the scale will only make things worse. Although most patients do not note hair loss, there can be extensive alopecia hair loss (alopecia) in severe cases.

Many of these medications have severe side effects. Doctors usually prescribe them for short periods of time.
Use: This is a newly developed oral drug for the treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Its efficacy is touted as being similar to the biologic response modifiers. Major side effects seem to be gastrointestinal so that it is recommended to start with a low dose and gradually increase it to the full therapeutic amount over about a week to avoid intolerable GI symptoms. No special laboratory tests for monitoring are required.

View all slides as one page Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a procedure that treats precancerous cells, in addition to other types of cancer cells. The medical treatment does this with the help of a photosensitizing drug and a light source that activates the applied drug, destroying cancer cells. PDT is approved to treat non-small cell lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and Barrett's esophagus. It's used to treat actinic keratosis, as well as acne, rosacea, skin cancer, sun damage, oily skin, wrinkles, warts, psoriasis, and enlarged sebaceous glands.
When we performed subgroup analyses, we found that preferences are, in part, dependent on sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Older patients ( ≥65 years) appear to care less about the probability of improvement compared with younger individuals. In most other studies20,21 using time trade-off, willingness to pay, and visual analog scales to assess health state utilities in psoriasis, utilities were largely independent of age. However, psoriasis-related impairment may be perceived differently among different age groups. For example, it has been reported5,12,40,41 that older patients experience psoriasis more physically than mentally compared with younger patients. Correspondingly, younger patients with psoriasis were shown22 to have greater willingness to pay for social comfort and emotional health than were older patients. Our descriptive analyses also showed the tendencies that women care more about the probability of improvement than men and that singles place greater value on this attribute compared with individuals living with a partner (Figure 2A and C). Although differences did not achieve statistical significance in our sample, it seems likely that women and singles attach special importance to appealing appearance, not the least because of expectations from society and from potential partners.

Eczema Booklet Global Warming Dr Sue-Ann Ho Individuals with psoriasis aged 18 years or older who attended outpatient clinics at the Dermatology Department of the University Medical Centre Mannheim between December 1, 2009, and September 30, 2010, were asked to participate in the study. To ensure that the full range of antipsoriatic treatments (ie, local therapy, UV therapy, classic systemic therapy, or biologicals) would be valid options, only patients with moderate to severe psoriasis according to the criteria of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use29 were recruited. These included (1) those with a Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) of 10 or more30; (2) patients with psoriatic involvement of the hands, feet, or head; (3) patients with psoriatic arthritis according to Classification of Psoriatic Arthritis criteria31; and (4) those receiving systemic antipsoriatic therapy. Patients visiting our department for the first time, patients coming for follow-up visits, and those with and without ongoing antipsoriatic therapy were included. The study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Medical Faculty Mannheim and performed according to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki.
