Triggering psoriasis: the role of infections and medications. Disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs)
A/Prof Chris Baker interviewed on 3AW's 'Talking Health' If one parent has the disease, there is about a 10 percent chance of a child contracting it. If both parents have psoriasis, the chance increases to 50 percent. No one can predict who will get psoriasis. Scientists now believe that at least 10 percent of the general population inherits one or more of the genes that create a predisposition to psoriasis. However, only 2 to 3 percent of the population develops the disease.
The diagnosis of psoriasis is typically made by obtaining information from the physical examination of the skin, medical history, and relevant family health history. Occupational Dermatology Clinic

Health topics Fee schedule Ciclosporin capsules are usually taken twice daily. After appropriate control of the disease is maintained, topical therapy can be discontinued until a flare-up occurs. Use of emollients should be recommended, to reduce the scaly appearance of the lesions and to potentially reduce the amount of corticosteroid needed.

Natural sunlight can help psoriasis and may explain why it is relatively rare on the face. It has been suggested that a more active lifestyle can help psoriasis, but whether this is an independent factor or more related to better weight control is less certain.

Stress. Most cases of psoriasis go through cycles, causing problems for a few weeks or months before easing or stopping. The anti-TNF receptor fusion protein, etanercept, has the most clinical trial data supporting its use in scalp psoriasis. Etanercept was given in an open-label trial of 2,555 patients to compare continuous versus interrupted therapy.48 PGA was the primary end point and ScPGA was reported as a secondary end point. All patients (continuous therapy and interrupted therapy groups) were treated with etanercept 50 mg twice weekly for the first 12 weeks of the study. Subsequently, the continuous therapy cohort continued with 50 mg once weekly for an additional 12 weeks; subjects in the interrupted therapy cohort held therapy (if subject achieved PGA ≤2) until they lost response, at which point etanercept was restarted at week 16 or 20 and was continued up until the end of the study at week 24.48
Relationships can be difficult, some finding it difficult to enter into relationships because they feel self-conscious. Encourage them to have more inner confidence and work on their self-esteem empowering them to feel more confident about themselves. Encourage them to talk to their friends and others educating them about this condition, that it is not catching, it can be genetic and that it is an over production of skin cells.

Dermatologists recommend using a scale softener. A scale softener that contains salicylic acid can soften the thick, stubborn patches of psoriasis. Softening these patches also allows medicine that you apply to the psoriasis to work better. When applying medicine to your scalp, be sure to lift your hair out of the way. This helps ensure that you apply the medicine to your scalp and not your hair.

Psoriasis in patients with lupus erythematosus Guttate psoriasis — Medscape Fortunately, this isn’t all that common, but it does occur, says Jerry Bagel, MD, director of the Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey. “Some people may lose clumps of hair, but this hair does grow back in about a month with adequate scalp psoriasis treatment,” he says. “The hair loss may be from scratching and the inflammation of the disease.” This is one of the reasons why so many people with psoriasis are desperate for psoriasis remedies that can ease symptoms.
McCord advises patients to seek treatment early from a doctor experienced with the disease. A dermatologist can provide patients with the correct diagnosis and information to manage the disease. “If you are diagnosed and treated early, you may avoid the pitfalls of ineffective and inappropriate therapy,” she adds.

Creams, lotions or ointments containing corticosteroids are powerful anti-inflammatories that, when applied to the affected areas of the skin help reduce itching, irritation and redness. They also slow cell turnover and help reduce the build-up of plaques. Prolonged use can cause a thinning of the skin and your body can resist its effects. Typically, corticosteroids are only used off and on to help keep symptoms under control.

Exercise both increases the body’s production of endorphins (chemicals that improve mood and energy) and reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. So more exercise may prove helpful for overall stress and for fewer and less-severe flares.

Emollients are moisturising treatments applied directly to the skin to reduce water loss and cover it with a protective film. If you have mild psoriasis, an emollient is probably the first treatment your GP will suggest.
