A doctor may recommend going outside for short periods — though too much sunlight can make psoriasis worse, so this option doesn't work for everyone. Doctors may also prescribe special light treatments.

Care and support The severity of scalp psoriasis can range from a few spots of dandruff-like scaling to major eruptions that cover large areas and are difficult to treat. Scalp psoriasis can also extend beyond the hairline onto the forehead, the back of the neck and around the ears. Persistent scalp lesions can eventually lead to thinning hair or even hair loss.

Although the algorithm serves as a guide to the treatment of localized psoriasis, various paths can be taken to achieve control of localized disease. The treatment path should be decided on a patient-to-patient basis. As mentioned previously, generalized psoriasis may require more complex forms of therapy. Consultation with a dermatologist may be beneficial for patients who require such therapy.

One of the problems with clinical phototherapy is the difficulty many patients have gaining access to a facility. Indoor tanning resources are almost ubiquitous today and could be considered as a means for patients to get UV exposure when dermatologist provided phototherapy is not available. Indoor tanning is already used by many people as a treatment for psoriasis; one indoor facility reported that 50% of its clients were using the center for psoriasis treatment; another reported 36% were doing the same thing. However, a concern with the use of commercial tanning is that tanning beds that primarily emit UVA might not effectively treat psoriasis. One study found that plaque psoriasis is responsive to erythemogenic doses of either UVA or UVB, as exposure to either can cause dissipation of psoriatic plaques. It does require more energy to reach erythemogenic dosing with UVA.

Skin Cancers Conferences by Subject Psoriasis is often diagnosed or at least suspected on the basis of its appearance and distribution. However, psoriasis may resemble eczema or other skin diseases and further tests may be required. It may be necessary to remove a small piece of skin (a biopsy) and have it examined by a pathologist to confirm the diagnosis. If there are joint symptoms, X-rays and other laboratory tests may be in order. Psoriasis cannot be cured, but like many other medical conditions, it is controllable with treatment. Your doctor may have you seen by a consultant such as a dermatologist, rheumatologist or immunologist to help diagnose and treat your form of psoriasis.
