Life with Psoriasis Moisturizers, especially with therapeutic concentrations of salicylic acid, lactic acid, urea, and glycolic acid may be helpful in psoriasis. These moisturizers are available as prescription and nonprescription forms. These help reduce the scales that impede the movement of topical medications into the deeper layers of the skin. Some available preparations include salicylic acid (Salex) and lactic acid (AmLactin, Lac-Hydrin). These may be used one to three times a day on the body. Other bland moisturizers, including Vaseline and Crisco vegetable shortening, may also be helpful in at least reducing the dry appearance of psoriasis.

Skin Gallery Environmental factors like physical or chemical injury to the skin, throat infections, reaction to certain drugs, hormonal changes, climate factors and more commonly, physical, mental and emotional stress can precipitate the onset and contribute to the perpetuation of psoriasis.
Normally, skin cells reproduce and mature as they move from the deeper layers of the epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin) to the surface. This process is called proliferation and usually takes approximately 28 days. In psoriasis, this process is accelerated, only taking about 4 days. The new skin cells reproduce too quickly and move toward the skin surface in an immature form, causing a build-up of silvery scale (dead skin cells). There is also an increased blood flow to the skin and a thickening of the epidermis, leading to the development of red, raised plaques (a plaque is a raised, red, scaling, well defined area more than 1cm in size).

In conclusion, although patients with psoriasis attach significant importance to the probability and magnitude of benefit, it appears that process attributes, such as location and method of delivery of treatment, may be even more important. A careful history of patient preferences must be incorporated into therapeutic decision making, with particular attention to age and work context. Synthesizing evidence-based medicine with shared decision making may have the potential to enhance treatment satisfaction, facilitate adherence, and optimize efficiency and clinical outcomes.

Scopus (607) Pain Control For psoriasis of the scalp, a 2016 review found dual therapy (vitamin D analogues and topical corticosteroids) or corticosteroid monotherapy to be more effective and safer than topical vitamin D analogues alone. Due to their similar safety profiles and minimal benefit of dual therapy over monotherapy, corticosteroid monotherapy appears to be an acceptable treatment for short-term treatment.

She stopped taking cyclosporine when her doctors offered phototherapy.
Cancer therapy shows promise for psoriasis treatment Nast A Psoriasis can significantly influence a person’s quality of life. The physical and mental disability experienced with this disease can be comparable or in excess of that found in patients with other chronic illnesses such as cancer, arthritis, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, and depression. A study by Kurd et al further supports the notion that psoriasis impacts quality of life and potentially long-term survival. There should be a higher clinical suspicion for depression in the patient with psoriasis.
Salicylic acid: Some treatments contain salicylic acid. This helps the outer layer of the skin to shed and softens the scales that develop with scalp psoriasis.
