J Invest Dermatol. 2010;130(4):933–943. [PubMed] Psoriasis of the scalp is a common yet difficult condition to treat. Overlying dense hair, inaccessibility to UV exposure, and noncompliance with treatment that often involves messy, malodorous topical medications are factors that frequently limit therapeutic success. Psoriasis of the scalp often brings patients to dermatologists because of itching, scaling, hair loss, and bleeding.1 Topical medications, such as tar shampoos, steroid solutions, and oils, have been the mainstays of the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Unfortunately, some patients simply do not respond to this form of therapy, and compliance requires a lot of time and motivation. Aside from topical medications, few treatment modalities exist for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Phototherapy, while excellent for body psoriasis, proves relatively ineffective for the scalp in patients without closely shaved heads, because the hair causes mechanical hindrance for light access. Even when traditional phototherapy can be used for the treatment of scalp psoriasis, noninvolved areas of the scalp and face are often inadvertently exposed. Systemic therapies that are used to control psoriatic lesions elsewhere on the body will improve scalp lesions but are rarely indicated solely for scalp psoriasis.2 It is clear that new and innovative treatment modalities are required for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. These are filled with pus that is non-infectious. The skin around the bumps is reddish and large portions of the skin may redden as well. It can follow a cycle of redness of the skin, followed by pustules and scaling. Tablets Profile Info Immune: The immune system is made up of cells that help the body fight infection. With psoriasis, the immune system becomes overactive causing these immune cells to move to the top layer of skin (the epidermis) and act as if they are healing a wound. They stimulate skin cells to grow too quickly, and this causes the thick, scaly build-up seen in psoriasis plaques. During this process, these hyperactive immune cells cause your blood cells to dilate or widen (making the patches very red) and more immune cells move towards the surface of the skin. The result is a cycle in which new cells are made too quickly, in days instead of weeks. The dead skin can’t fall off fast enough, which leads to plaque formation. This process only stops when treatment interrupts the cycle. the Siliq REMS Program Laboratory tests Discovery Grants Journal of Novel Physiotherapies Open Access Journal Ang Skin & Hair Clinic Health in Young Adults Cholesterol Teenagers: clinical trials (Young People) Phototherapy Use cover-ups when you feel it necessary. On those days when you feel particularly self-conscious, cover the psoriasis with clothing or use cosmetic cover-up products, such as body makeup or a concealer. These products can mask redness and psoriasis plaques. They can irritate the skin, however, and shouldn't be used on open sores, cuts or unhealed lesions. The palms and soles become red and scaly, with white/yellow sterile pustules (blisters of non-infectious pus). The pus consists of white blood cells. It is not an infection and is not contagious. Reddish-brown patches are present as the pustules resolve. Psoriasis affecting the palms and soles can severely limit everyday activities, for example, walking can become difficult. This can be a very painful and debilitating form of psoriasis. “Psoriasis has a great emotional impact on some patients. But it doesn’t have to, given the right care and treatment,” she says.
