Is psoriasis contagious? (video) Climatotherapy, the oldest form of phototherapy involving exposure to sunlight, is well established at a number of clinics around the world. Perhaps the most successful is the psoriasis treatment centre at the Dead Sea.23 At 300 m below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth. Its mineral content is greater than that of any other naturally occurring body of water on earth. The extra 300 m through which sunlight has to pass, combined with the mineral haze over the Dead Sea, results in light exposure that has proved highly beneficial for psoriasis. Results are comparable with those obtained with broadband UVB phototherapy.24 Evidence of psoriasis Colorectal Cancer: Open Access Open Access Journal Journal of Infectious Disease and Pathology Open Access Journal External links[edit] Ask Us (22)    Getty Images  WOMEN'S HEALTH PUVA is a special treatment using a photosensitizing drug and timed artificial-light exposure composed of wavelengths of ultraviolet light in the UVA spectrum. The photosensitizing drug in PUVA is called psoralen. Both the psoralen and the UVA light must be administered within one hour of each other for a response to occur. These treatments are usually given in a physician's office two to three times per week. Several weeks of PUVA is usually required before seeing significant results. The light exposure time is gradually increased during each subsequent treatment. Psoralens may be given orally as a pill or topically as a bath or lotion. After a short incubation period, the skin is exposed to a special wavelength of ultraviolet light called UVA. Patients using PUVA are generally sun sensitive and must avoid sun exposure for a period of time after PUVA. Common side effects with PUVA include burning, aging of the skin, increased brown spots called lentigines, and an increased risk of skin cancer, including melanoma. The relative increase in skin cancer risk with PUVA treatment is controversial. PUVA treatments need to be closely monitored by a physician and discontinued when a maximum number of treatments have been reached. Conclusions When choosing among treatment options, individuals with psoriasis appear to be willing to accept treatment-related adverse effects to obtain process attributes compatible with their personal and professional life. Incorporating preferences in shared decision making may facilitate treatment adherence and optimize outcome.

Two pivotal trials, ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, have reported significant improvement in scalp psoriasis.47 The studies included patients with moderate-to-very severe scalp psoriasis (ScPGA ≥3) at baseline. The study design included a 16-week placebo-controlled period in which patients were randomized to apremilast 30 mg twice daily or placebo. At 16 weeks, the percentage of patients who achieved an ScPGA score of 0 (clear) or 1 (minimal) was significantly greater in the apremilast group (46.5% versus 17.5% in ESTEEM 1; 40.9% versus 17.2% in ESTEEM 2; P<0.0001 for both).47 During the open-label period, all patients received apremilast 30 mg twice daily from week 16 to week 32. In those patients who received apremilast from baseline, 37.4% and 32.4% of patients achieved an ScPGA score of 0 or 1 (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively). Of the patients initially randomized to placebo who switched to apremilast at week 16, 43.6% and 50.7% achieved an improvement in ScPGA score to 0 or 1 at week 32 (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively). By the end of week 52, in all patients who were PASI responders, an ScPGA of 0 or 1 was maintained in 83.3% and 62.5% of patients receiving apremilast (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively) and in 64.1% and 53.3% of those initially started on placebo and receiving apremilast in the open-label period only (ESTEEM 1 and ESTEEM 2, respectively).47 Why it works: Psychosocial stress may alter your body so that a psoriasis flare is more likely, according to a report published in November 2013 in the British Journal of Dermatology. “People can’t neglect stress management,” Menter says. He recommends meditation, counseling, or a combination. Stress management or therapy could help you cope better with a flare and find ways to live with the stress of scalp psoriasis. This is especially true in social situations, although all aspects of life can be disturbed. Inverse psoriasis, which affects the genital skin, and scalp psoriasis can be particularly troubling. Psoriasis affecting the hands may make it impossible to interact normally with others. It is important to remember that there are ways to manage and treat psoriasis flares. It may seem as if one's quality of life has diminished, but there are many organizations that offer support to psoriasis patients. The National Psoriasis Foundation is an excellent source of accurate information as well as emotional support for afflicted patients. For example, regular use of moisturizers may improve the itching and scaling. Reducing or limiting tobacco use and alcohol consumption may decrease the number of flares of psoriasis. Lifestyle changes—such as maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active—may help lessen or prevent the development of associated diseases.
