In recent years, a wide range of treatment options has been established for psoriasis, including a variety of local therapies, phototherapy, traditional systemic antipsoriatic medications, and biologicals.6-11 The clinical goal is to find the most efficient treatment, associated with the fewest possible adverse effects (AEs), at a reasonable cost. What can result is a process of treatment trial and error and inefficiencies in identifying an effective and patient-acceptable therapy.12 Specifically, the processes and AEs associated with recommended treatments may not fit well with patients' social and work context and preferences.13 Poor fit of a recommended treatment could contribute to the high level of dissatisfaction with5,14 and low adherence to psoriasis treatments.15-17 Nonadherence to prescribed treatment has been reported18 in up to 40% of individuals with psoriasis. A monoclonal antibody against IL-17a, ixekizumab, was analyzed in a post hoc analysis of the Phase 2 trial to determine the effect on scalp psoriasis.55 A total of 105/142 (74%) patients enrolled in the Phase 2 program had scalp involvement with a mean baseline PSSI of 18.7 (SD 14.1). At week 12, the percentage improvement of PSSI from baseline was 87.1% (25 mg), 94.8% (75 mg), and 84.8% (150 mg) compared to 30.5% (placebo). By week 20, a PSSI of 0, or clear, was achieved in 58.3%, 66.7%, and 86.4% of patients receiving ixekizumab (25 mg, 75 mg, and 150 mg, respectively) compared to only 10% in the placebo group. At the end of the open-label period at week 48, all patients were receiving ixekizumab 120 mg every 4 weeks, and 78% of all patients had a PSSI of 0.55 This Journal This web site is managed and authorised by the Department of Health & Human Services, State Government of Victoria, Australia National Reality TV Awards 2018: Hayley Hughes dazzles in skimpy co-ords as she joins glam Love Island co-star Samira Mighty Comorbid disease; and Last full review/revision January 2017 by Shinjita Das, MD Psoriasis Risk Factors Psoriasis treatments: phototherapy (light therapy) Carers: congenital heart disease (children) Image courtesy of Hon Pak, M.D. and reprinted with permission from eMedicine.com, 2009 Psoriasis: Treatment Options to Manage Your Symptoms & Skin Fitness Archives of Clinical Microbiology Open Access Journal Edition: ENGLISH DEUTSCH ESPAÑOL FRANÇAIS PORTUGUÊS If you have the genetic basis of psoriasis, a trigger can cause psoriasis to flare up. Modalities to enhance delivery, such as UVB comb, have been developed and tested. In one trial, 14 subjects were treated with a fiber-optic UVB comb three times weekly for 12 weeks, with an area of scalp reserved as a control site. In this study, the treatment sites showed a mean improvement in the modified PASI score of 3.6, with a difference in mean modified PASI between the treatment and control sites of 3.9 (P<0.0001).57 Give Now Richards HL, Fortune DG, Griffiths CE. Adherence to treatment in patients with psoriasis.  J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol. 2006;20(4):370-379PubMedGoogle ScholarCrossref Another sub-analysis of the PSUNRISE trial, a trial evaluating the effect of infliximab in patients who failed etanercept, was done looking at disease activity within four designated body regions (scalp, face, nails, and palms/soles) as assessed by investigators using a 10 cm visual analog scale at weeks 1, 10, and 26. Improvement was defined as a minimum of 1.1 cm reduction from baseline in patients who had clinically active disease in all areas. The regional response rate was highest for the scalp at week 10, compared to other areas examined.52 Education & Learning LCCN: sh85108334 NDL: 00954062 Jeffrey Meffert, MD is a member of the following medical societies: American Academy of Dermatology, American Medical Association, Association of Military Dermatologists, Texas Dermatological Society Less common types of psoriasis infliximab (Remicade) 0800 22 44 88 Treatment for psoriasis usually helps to keep the condition under control. It is available only in gel form and exerts its effects through gamma and beta retinoic acid receptors. Tazarotene helps to normalize the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes, as well as to decrease cutaneous inflammation.14,15 Once-daily application of tazarotene gel, 0.05 percent or 0.1 percent concentration, has been shown to be as effective as twice-daily application of 0.05 percent fluocinonide cream.16 Continue Reading (Page 2) >> Journal of Tropical Diseases & Public Health Open Access Journal Eczema in young people (in ‘Long term health conditions’) (Young People) Tel : +65 6734 1411 Skip directly to search Skip directly to A to Z list Skip directly to page options Skip directly to site content Birds & Blooms There are several different forms of psoriasis, including plaque psoriasis or psoriasis vulgaris (common type), guttate psoriasis (small, drop-like spots), inverse psoriasis (in the folds like of the underarms, navel, groin, and buttocks), and pustular psoriasis (small pus-filled yellowish blisters). This approach called for treating people with moderate to severe psoriasis with phototherapy or traditional systemic therapies—drugs such as methotrexate and cyclosporine—before offering them biologic therapies (a type of treatment that works with your immune system).
