I started researching for a new, healthier alternative to treat my psoriasis. I tried things that made it worse before finally settling on a few techniques that made it much better. I'm by no means "cured" of psoriasis, but I've found the best way to keep flakes to a minimum.

Also, after you shampoo, try a good conditioner to seal in moisture. Remember that anytime you put something on to treat your psoriasis, gently rub it onto your scalp instead of your hair. That way it has a better chance of working.

Excimer lasers or pulsed dye lasers are used in laser therapy. A pulsed dye laser will create a concentrated beam of yellow light. When this light hits the skin, it converts to heat. The heat then destroys the extra blood vessels in the skin that contribute to psoriasis. Excimer lasers will deliver ultraviolet light to localized areas of the skin that help treat psoriasis. These lasers produce UV light in wavelengths similar to narrow-band UVB. Laser therapy uses intense doses of laser light to help control areas of mild to moderate psoriasis without damaging surrounding healthy skin. These can be quite effective for small plaques of psoriasis, but since only small areas of skin can be treated at once, they are not practical for extensive disease.

Print this section The relationship between socioeconomic status and treatment preferences appears to be more complex. According to our results, participants with intermediate household incomes ( €1000- €2000 per month), mostly belonging to the working class, attach great importance to long-lasting improvement. To achieve improvement, they are more willing to risk AEs than are participants with lower household incomes ( < €1000 per month) who are likely in Germany to be supported by social benefits. Psoriasis is known to have a negative effect on individuals' professional life and employment status.5,42 Therefore, individuals who are employed in moderate-income occupations may be more likely to demonstrate preferences for treatment compatible with work constraints, ie, a treatment with long-lasting benefit that minimizes time lost from an hourly wage job. In descriptive analyses, we also observed the tendency that participants with a monthly income of more than €1000 care more about the probability of benefit than do those with an income below that level (Figure 3A). The same applies to participants who are working compared with those who are homemakers, unemployed, or retired (Figure 3B). Although differences were not significant, our findings may indicate that individuals with an occupation attach greater importance to appearance, possibly because of expectations at work and from society. Remarkably, and in accordance with previous willingness-to-pay analyses in psoriasis,21,22 income was not a predictor for the effect of individual cost on preferences. Cost to be covered by the individual was the process attribute regarded as least important, ie, participants were prepared to trade copayments for more convenient treatment modalities independent of their income.

PUVA: PUVA is the therapy that combines a psoralen-containing oral medication with ultraviolet A (UV-A) light therapy. Psoralens make the skin more sensitive to long-wave UVA (320-400 nm). Methoxsalen (Oxsoralen) is a psoralen that is taken by mouth before UV-A light therapy. More than 85% of patients report relief of disease symptoms with 20-30 treatments. Therapy is usually given two to three times per week on an outpatient basis, with maintenance treatments every two to four weeks to maintain remission. Adverse effects of PUVA therapy include nausea, itching, and burning. Long-term complications include increased risks of sensitivity to the sun, sunburn, skin cancer, skin aging and cataracts. Protective glasses must be worn during and after treatment to prevent cataracts. PUVA therapy is not used for children younger than 12 years of age.
