Parakeratosis: retention of nuclei in the stratum corneum of the epidermis If you’re using salicylic acid as a treatment, it may cause hair breakage and loss. But it’ll stop once you stop treatment. The same thing can happen if you’re taking a retinoid.
Meghan Markle throws ball while wearing high heels in Loughborough Coal tar has been used as a treatment for psoriasis for several decades due to its anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory actions, and its potent anti-pruritic properties.22 Although crude coal tar is the most effective tar available for the treatment of psoriasis, the application of crude coal tar to the scalp presents a challenge. As such, coal tar solution or liquor carbonis detergens 5%–20% is frequently recommended, formulated as a lotion, or added to a corticosteroid preparation. Of note, the use of coal tar has largely fallen out of favor to newer topical medications. Tar’s malodor, adverse effects (hair staining and drying), and carcinogenicity limit its use, although newer studies challenge these findings.23,24 The use of coal tar in cosmetic preparations has been banned in Canada and the European Union over concerns regarding carcinogenicity.

One of the most common treatment options, topicals, are usually the first medication your doctor will prescribe after you’ve been diagnosed with psoriasis. They come in different forms, like creams, ointments, gels, or foam. Topicals work on top of the skin, where the symptoms appear – not under the skin, where symptoms start. Applying topicals directly on plaques can help slow the growth of skin cells.

Most psoriasis therapies aim to stop skin cells from growing so quickly, reduce inflammation, and smooth out the skin. Why it works: When sunlight penetrates the top layers of the skin, the ultraviolet (UV) radiation bombards the DNA inside skin cells and injures it. This can cause wrinkles, aging skin, and skin cancers. However, these same damaging effects can destroy the skin cells that form psoriasis plaques

“For the first time ever, the newest biologics can take someone from having psoriasis to no psoriasis. They are completely clear,” says Mark Kauffman, MD, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Given by shot or intravenous (IV) infusion, biologics are reserved for people with moderate to severe psoriasis. In the past, biologic drugs tended to aim their bow and arrow at tumor necrosis factor-alpha, which plays a role in the inflammatory cascade known to cause psoriasis. The newest crop of biologics, however, gets even more specific in their aim, making them that much more effective and safe. They are even effective if someone has tried and failed or stopped responding to older biologics.
