Treatment can lessen the formation of the excessive cells and help to return your skin to a smoother appearance. Treatments may include topical creams or lotions, phototherapy (light therapy) with or without certain medications, or prescription drugs that may be taken by mouth or injected. Some injectable medications can be used by the patient at home, too.
Most people with psoriasis experience nothing more than mild skin lesions that can be treated effectively with topical therapies.

One of the most common treatment options, topicals, are usually the first medication your doctor will prescribe after you’ve been diagnosed with psoriasis. They come in different forms, like creams, ointments, gels, or foam. Topicals work on top of the skin, where the symptoms appear – not under the skin, where symptoms start. Applying topicals directly on plaques can help slow the growth of skin cells.
Occasionally psoriasis can disappear without treatment but more usually, it is a chronic disease that requires treatment. Patches (also called plaques or lesions) can occur on various parts of the body, including the scalp, elbows, and or knees.

The prognosis for patients with psoriasis is good. Though the condition is chronic and is not curable, it can be controlled effectively in many cases. Studies for future treatments look promising and research to find ways to battle psoriasis is ongoing.

People with chronic plaque psoriasis often have lesions on the scalp. Hair makes the scalp difficult to treat and the adjacent facial skin is particularly sensitive to topical treatments.
"You don't really see maximum benefit until 10 to 12 weeks and many patients continue to do it for six months," says Dr. Klein. "There are also home light box units that we try to get insurance to cover." Sometimes Dr. Klein will have patients use a combination of light therapy and a retinoid topical because the topical thins plaques and makes the skin more sensitive to light therapy.

As these treatments are expensive, the government only subsidises the cost for patients with severe cases of the disease and where all other treatment options have been exhausted.
