Tools For most people, psoriasis patches vary in size. They can range from small spots with dandruff-like flakes to wide patches that cover large areas of skin. Mild psoriasis can be annoying, but severe cases can be painful, cause scarring, and sometimes limit a person’s mobility. Flares (when psoriasis gets worse) occur in cycles, with symptoms that last for weeks to months and may then lessen for a period of time before coming back.

Br J Dermatol. 1996; 135: 647-650 Climatotherapy, the oldest form of phototherapy involving exposure to sunlight, is well established at a number of clinics around the world. Perhaps the most successful is the psoriasis treatment centre at the Dead Sea.23 At 300 m below sea level, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth. Its mineral content is greater than that of any other naturally occurring body of water on earth. The extra 300 m through which sunlight has to pass, combined with the mineral haze over the Dead Sea, results in light exposure that has proved highly beneficial for psoriasis. Results are comparable with those obtained with broadband UVB phototherapy.24

There are many ways to treat psoriasis and what works for one person may not work for another. It is important to keep working with your doctor until you find the treatment plan that reduces or eliminates your symptoms. Since there is currently no cure for psoriasis, the goal is to attain remission (period in the course of a disease when symptoms become less severe or disappear). With each treatment or treatment combination that you try, keep track of the medication and the dosage, keep track of its effects and of any side effects. Ask your doctor how long before you should see a change in your symptoms or know that the treatment is not working effectively for you.
