For dichotomous variables, the RIS differences between subgroups were tested for significance using analysis of variance. If there were more than 2 groups, a post hoc test was applied. Significance was assessed at P ≤ .05.
Many types of non-biological systemic medicine can be used for psoriasis. Different systemic medicines may be tried at different times and the risks as well as benefits should be considered. Cyclosporine and methotrexate are two non-biological systemic treatments for psoriasis (see also the overview on systemic treatments). Both medicines work in different ways by slowing down the skin cell production and reducing inflammation. They are usually taken as tablets, but can also be given as injections.

Guttate psoriasis is the second most common form of psoriasis. The word ‘guttate’ comes from the Latin for drop (guta) and this type of psoriasis occurs more commonly in children and young adults. It usually has a sudden onset, with the widespread appearance of small red teardrop shaped patches less than 1.5cm in size. The onset is often preceded by a streptococcal throat infection. In many cases, the condition disappears by itself after a few weeks or months.

Our editorial team Psoriasis: Light shed on new details You can’t catch scalp psoriasis from another person. As with other types, we don’t know what causes it. Doctors believe it comes from something wrong with your immune system that causes skin cells to grow too quickly and build up into patches. You may be more likely to get scalp psoriasis if it runs in your family.

Members Coal tar has been used as a treatment for psoriasis for several decades due to its anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory actions, and its potent anti-pruritic properties.22 Although crude coal tar is the most effective tar available for the treatment of psoriasis, the application of crude coal tar to the scalp presents a challenge. As such, coal tar solution or liquor carbonis detergens 5%–20% is frequently recommended, formulated as a lotion, or added to a corticosteroid preparation. Of note, the use of coal tar has largely fallen out of favor to newer topical medications. Tar’s malodor, adverse effects (hair staining and drying), and carcinogenicity limit its use, although newer studies challenge these findings.23,24 The use of coal tar in cosmetic preparations has been banned in Canada and the European Union over concerns regarding carcinogenicity.
