Saurat JH View Article Sources Recent streptococcal throat infection, viral infection, immunization, use of antimalarial drug, or trauma Inverse psoriasis (also known as flexural psoriasis) appears as smooth, inflamed patches of skin. The patches frequently affect skin folds, particularly around the genitals (between the thigh and groin), the armpits, in the skin folds of an overweight abdomen (known as panniculus), between the buttocks in the intergluteal cleft, and under the breasts in the inframammary fold. Heat, trauma, and infection are thought to play a role in the development of this atypical form of psoriasis.[19] Cyclosporine, generally used intermittently for inducing a clinical response with one or several courses over 3-6 months Apr. 18, 2018 — A compound from the body's own immune cells can treat psoriasis in mice and holds promise for other autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, according to a new ... read more Plaque psoriasis: Most commonly affects the extensor surfaces of the knees, elbows, scalp, and trunk The skin symptoms of psoriasis are more likely to improve spontaneously (without treatment) in summer, compared to other times of the year. However, the psychological effects of the condition may be worse during summer due to the need to expose more skin in warm conditions. Because skin rash is a highly visible symptom, it is difficult to hide from other people during summer. However, exposing the skin can be embarrassing and lead to stigma and discrimination. Pierre Bourrier/Self Photos Agency Although no formal study with the anti-TNF monoclonal antibody adalimumab in scalp psoriasis has been performed, a sub-analysis of the Phase 3 BELIEVE study was recently published.50 Of the patients enrolled, 663/730 (91.3%) had scalp involvement. The BELIEVE study compared adalimumab with or without Ca/BMD ointment (applied to body, not scalp) in a randomized, controlled safety and efficacy trial. Patients with baseline scalp psoriasis had more severe disease and were slower to respond initially compared to patients without, but this was no longer significant by week 8, at which point the majority of patients had achieved a PASI-75 response and continued to improve by week 16. PSSI responses correlated with PASI responses. The median PSSI score in patients at baseline was 14, at week 8 was 1, and at week 16 was 0. By week 8, 75.6% of patients had achieved a PSSI response (PSSI ≤4) and by week 16, a median decrease from baseline of 100% (mean 77.2%±96.9%).50 Disclaimer Notice Thursday, June 9, 2016 Common types of psoriasis Journal of Genetic Disorders & Genetic Reports Hybrid Open Access Journal Journal of Morphology and Anatomy Non-biological medications yoga Other Systemic Agents for Psoriasis Prof Wolf-Henning Boehncke, MD soreness around patches This type of treatment works throughout the body. Ultraviolet Light Therapy Can Treat Psoriasis Plaques In randomized controlled trials, super-potent CP in various formulations has been shown to be the most efficacious topical treatment for scalp psoriasis. In a recent vehicle-controlled, randomized, double-blind study involving 81 patients with moderate-to-severe scalp psoriasis, 85% of patients using CP spray were clear or almost clear of their disease after 4 weeks of twice daily application compared with only 13% in the vehicle control group (P<0.001).28 Another recent study involving 168 patients with moderate scalp psoriasis evaluated the efficacy of once daily CP 0.05% shampoo. This study demonstrated similar results, with 42% of patients using CP shampoo found to be clear or almost clear of their disease after 4 weeks of treatment compared with only 2% in the vehicle control group (P<0.001).21 Continued twice weekly use of the CP shampoo provided continued benefit to the treatment group, significantly prolonging the time to first relapse, and increasing the total percentage of patients without relapse.21 Importantly, both studies stated similar adverse event profiles between the treatment and vehicle arms, with no significant differences in scalp atrophy, telangiectasias, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression or other adverse events. A recent Cochrane review found the most evidence for the use of CP in the treatment of scalp psoriasis, with four high-quality clinical trials demonstrating a combined 1.9-point change in participants’ psoriasis on a six-point global improvement scale (Investigators Global Assessment of Improvement).18 Methotrexate. Taken orally, methotrexate (Rheumatrex) helps psoriasis by decreasing the production of skin cells and suppressing inflammation. It may also slow the progression of psoriatic arthritis in some people. Methotrexate is generally well-tolerated in low doses but may cause upset stomach, loss of appetite and fatigue. When used for long periods, it can cause a number of serious side effects, including severe liver damage and decreased production of red and white blood cells and platelets.
