Managing Diabetes at Work Ductal Carcinoma In Situ Part-worth utilities for each attribute level were computed using logit regression. The part-worth utilities were then scaled to sum to zero within each attribute. Attribute importance was assessed by calculating the range between the highest and the lowest part-worth utility for each attribute. To allow comparison between attributes, the relative importance score (RIS) for each attribute was calculated as a percentage by dividing each attribute's range by the sum of all attribute ranges and multiplying by 100.28 A RIS for each attribute was calculated for each participant and then averaged across all participants. To compare results between attribute groups 1 and 2, attribute importance was translated to one list by matching the relative importance of cost as assessed in both groups.

Methotrexate taken orally is an effective treatment for severe disabling psoriasis, especially severe psoriatic arthritis or widespread erythrodermic or pustular psoriasis unresponsive to topical agents or UV light therapy (narrowband UVB [NBUVB]) or psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA). Methotrexate seems to interfere with the rapid proliferation of epidermal cells. Hematologic, renal, and hepatic function should be monitored. Dosage regimens vary, so only physicians experienced in its use for psoriasis should undertake methotrexate therapy.

Scalp psoriasis is one of the scalp conditions that you should never ignore. “Unfortunately a lot of the topical treatments are thick, gooey ointments that need to be rubbed on the scalp, and this can be a non-starter for some,” Dr. Farber says. The main ingredients in these products are tar or salicylic acid. “I recommend that people massage the lotion or foam into their scalp at night and then put on a shower cap to sleep,” he says. “The key thing is to be using something that fits with routine and lifestyle,” he says. “The good news is that once the scalp psoriasis is under control you can decrease frequency to every other day or twice a week, Dr. Bagel adds. If OTC topical products don’t do the trick, your dermatologist may prescribe Dovonex (a form of vitamin D that slows skin cell growth and removes scales), Taclonex (vitamin D-steroid combo), Tazorac (a topical retinoid that slows skin cell growth) or Anthralin, which reduces the rapid growth of skin cells.

Psoriasis Prevention Vitamin D analogues are used to help control overactive skin cell production by binding to the vitamin D receptors on the skin cells. Topical vitamin D analogues such as calcipotriene (Dovonex, Sorilux) and calcitriol (Vectical) are effective at slowing the growth of the skin cells and can be used with emollients and topical corticosteroids applied to the skin. Calcipotriene with betamethasone (Taclonex, Enstilar) is a vitamin D analogue that is already combined with a corticosteroid.

Psoriasis is often diagnosed or at least suspected on the basis of its appearance and distribution. However, psoriasis may resemble eczema or other skin diseases and further tests may be required. It may be necessary to remove a small piece of skin (a biopsy) and have it examined by a pathologist to confirm the diagnosis. If there are joint symptoms, X-rays and other laboratory tests may be in order. Psoriasis cannot be cured, but like many other medical conditions, it is controllable with treatment. Your doctor may have you seen by a consultant such as a dermatologist, rheumatologist or immunologist to help diagnose and treat your form of psoriasis.
