Because psoriasis is a complex disease with multiple comorbidities, applicability of these guidelines may be limited. Although some basic treatment algorithms exist, patient preference, disease severity, and other variables including comorbidities (eg, psoriatic arthritis [PsA], risk of major cardiac events, inflammatory bowel disease [IBD]), history of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), pregnancy and lactation, and specific contraindications to therapy (eg, renal failure, liver disease, active malignancy) should be considered. In this article, we summarize common themes across existing guidelines and consensus statements for the treatment of psoriasis and highlight areas where there is consistent agreement or lack of sufficient information.

After providing written informed consent, participants were assigned an identification code used to access a computerized survey to be completed before their clinical consultation. Technical assistance was provided if requested. Within the survey, participants' preferences were explored using CA. Generation and evaluation of the CA exercises involved (1) identification of key attributes associated with the range of psoriasis treatments; (2) assignment of various levels to the identified treatment attributes; (3) creation of hypothetical treatment scenarios by combining these levels in a random fashion; (4) pairing of the treatment scenarios using an orthogonal design to maximize discrimination of the relative importance of attributes while minimizing the number of choice tasks needed in the set; (5) presentation of choice sets to respondents; and (6) measurement of preferences for the treatment attributes based on the choices made for the presented choice sets.28 The range of currently available treatments was grouped into 6 outcome attributes (probability of benefit, magnitude of benefit, duration of benefit, probability of AEs, AE severity, and AE reversibility) and 5 process attributes (treatment location, frequency, duration, delivery method, and cost for the individual). Four realistic attribute levels, based on currently available treatments, were created for each attribute (Table 1).

Personalized Medicine and Psoriasis An Bras Dermatol Slowing the growth of skin cells may cause the plaques to become thinner and less scaly. Psoriasis occurs when the immune system misfires and starts overacting — creating inflammation inside the body. Vitamin D may also work by shifting the balance of your immune system and putting it in a more neutral and healthy state.
Support Our Work Cervical Cancer Arch Dermatol. 1983; 119: 655-659 Head-to-head comparisons of vitamin D for psoriasis of the body against potent or very potent corticosteroids had mixed findings. For both body and scalp psoriasis, combined treatment with vitamin D and corticosteroid performed significantly better than vitamin D alone or corticosteroid alone. Vitamin D generally performed better than coal tar, but findings relative to dithranol were mixed. When applied to psoriasis of the scalp, vitamin D was significantly less effective than both potent corticosteroids and very potent corticosteroids. Indirect evidence from placebo-controlled trials supported these findings.

Acitretin A treated lesion of psoriasis. The goals of treatment for localized psoriasis include a decrease in the size and redness of the plaque, as well as a reduction in the amount of scale on the lesion. Compared with the lesion in Figure 2, this lesion is flat, and the scale is not obvious. It does retain mild redness. This is the result that should be expected in the treatment of localized psoriasis.
There are several types of psoriasis. Most types of psoriasis tend to be mild to moderate. However, some types of psoriasis are more likely to be severe.
