Klebisella Liver Abscess Psoriasis of the scalp is a common yet difficult condition to treat. Overlying dense hair, inaccessibility to UV exposure, and noncompliance with treatment that often involves messy, malodorous topical medications are factors that frequently limit therapeutic success. Psoriasis of the scalp often brings patients to dermatologists because of itching, scaling, hair loss, and bleeding.1 Topical medications, such as tar shampoos, steroid solutions, and oils, have been the mainstays of the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Unfortunately, some patients simply do not respond to this form of therapy, and compliance requires a lot of time and motivation. Aside from topical medications, few treatment modalities exist for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Phototherapy, while excellent for body psoriasis, proves relatively ineffective for the scalp in patients without closely shaved heads, because the hair causes mechanical hindrance for light access. Even when traditional phototherapy can be used for the treatment of scalp psoriasis, noninvolved areas of the scalp and face are often inadvertently exposed. Systemic therapies that are used to control psoriatic lesions elsewhere on the body will improve scalp lesions but are rarely indicated solely for scalp psoriasis.2 It is clear that new and innovative treatment modalities are required for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. Hearing other people’s stories can make your own journey less lonely and arduous. Biological therapies or biologicals are monoclonal antibodies targeted at specific components of the immune system. They are often very effective treatments for psoriasis. State policy and action Mind & Brain UpToDate. Patient Information: Psoriasis (Beyond the Basics). There tend to be well-defined patches of red raised skin that can appear on any area of the skin, but the knees, elbows, scalp, trunk, and nails are the most common locations. There is also a flaky, white build up on top of the plaques, called scales. Possible plaque psoriasis symptoms include skin pain, itching, and cracking. A chronic condition like psoriasis can mean many hours in waiting rooms, but there are things you can do for your health during that time. The incidence of PsA is slightly higher in women, with peak onset occurring between 35-45 years of age. Onset may be gradual with mild symptoms developing slowly over a period of years, or progress more rapidly to become severe and destructive. Common Conditions MACRA Chronic plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis, and it is characterised by redness, thickness, and scaling. First-line management of chronic plaque psoriasis is with topical treatments, including vitamin D analogues, topical corticosteroids, tar-based preparations, dithranol, salicylic acid, and topical retinoids. Health Topics UV light therapy is typically used in patients with extensive psoriasis. The mechanism of action is unknown, although UVB light reduces DNA synthesis and can induce mild systemic immunosuppression. In PUVA, oral methoxypsoralen, a photosensitizer, is followed by exposure to long-wave UVA light (330 to 360 nm). PUVA has an antiproliferative effect and also helps to normalize keratinocyte differentiation. Doses of light are started low and increased as tolerated. Severe burns can result if the dose of drug or UVA is too high. In addition to inflamed, scaly skin, psoriatic arthritis causes swollen, painful joints that are typical of arthritis. Sometimes the joint symptoms are the first or only manifestation of psoriasis or at times only nail changes are seen. Symptoms range from mild to severe, and psoriatic arthritis can affect any joint. Although the disease usually isn't as crippling as other forms of arthritis, it can cause stiffness and progressive joint damage that in the most serious cases may lead to permanent deformity.
