The hair on the scalp may make usual topical medications for psoriasis difficult to use. So, you may be prescribed lotions, liquids, gels, foams, or sprays instead of thicker creams or ointments used on other parts of the body.

Because of the rapid turnover of patients among insurance providers, a short time horizon may be more appropriate to assess the relative cost-effectiveness of home phototherapy versus biologics. The purpose of this study is to estimate and compare the cost of home phototherapy versus biologics over a 3-year time horizon in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

9 Treatments to Soothe Psoriasis Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition. The age of onset, chronicity, physical, and psychosocial consequences of the disease cause psoriasis to have a significant impact on patient quality of life. Scalp psoriasis is no different, and effective treatment results in an improvement in quality of life. Successful management of scalp psoriasis includes topical therapies that are acceptable to the patient for mild-to-moderate disease, and systemic therapies for recalcitrant or moderate-to-severe disease. The most effective topical therapies are corticosteroid products, or combination products with calcipotriol and corticosteroid. Newer vehicle options provide more attractive and pleasing products for patients and may improve adherence. The current perspectives for management of scalp psoriasis are discussed including available data for systemic therapy of severe disease.

It usually extends to, or just beyond the hairline and commonly occurs behind the ears. Scalp psoriasis may appear in the form of fine white flakes (similar to dandruff) or the scale may become thickened, with an appearance like cradle cap.

Ultraviolet light in wavelengths near 313 nm (narrow band UVB) is effective in psoriasis. The hair, however, can pose a barrier to effective administration unless it is removed or sparse. The excimer laser produces out laser light in these UV wavelengths also and can be of benefit if the amount of scalp involvement is limited.
Several treatments may need to be tried before the most suitable regime is established, and different treatments may need to be used concurrently, or in rotation, for best effect or to minimise side-effects.
