It can cause severe itching and pain, and make the skin come off in sheets. It is rare, occurring in 3 percent of people who have psoriasis during their life time. It generally appears on people who have unstable plaque psoriasis.

For example, tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is involved in inflammation and is blocked by three of these medications. They all are expensive.
Some patients become easily discouraged about treatments, but newer therapies may make them more comfortable. That’s why McCord says patients should investigate treatment options early and educate themselves about their condition. Even if patients have a mild case of psoriasis and decide they don’t want a particular treatment option, there are ways they can decrease their symptoms.

napkin psoriasis – characteristically seen in infants between two and eight months of age For more extensive psoriasis, a useful option is ultraviolet (UV) light exposure. UV light can treat large areas of skin with few side effects, if performed in the physician's office. It should be kept in mind that all UV light causes mutational events, which can lead to skin cancer. At this time, the most popular type of UV light for psoriasis is called narrow-band UVB. Only a small portion of the UV light spectrum is used, which seems to be particularly beneficial for psoriasis and may be less carcinogenic. This UVB is quite different from the UVA, the wavelength available in tanning salons, which is not effective in psoriasis. Phototherapy can be used alone or with medications when treating psoriasis.

Moreover, we found that participants were willing to trade an increased risk of AEs for increased probability and magnitude of therapeutic benefit. This finding is in contradiction to the previously reported work of Seston and colleagues,27 who showed that patients with psoriasis prioritized low risk of AEs (skin cancer and liver damage) and that they were willing to trade time to achieve moderate (50%) skin improvement to minimize the risk of these AEs. In the CA exercise performed by the Seston group, AEs were precisely named, which may have influenced the measured preferences. However, preferences to avoid AEs were traded against “time to achieve moderate improvement ” rather than against probability and magnitude of improvement, making it difficult to compare their results with our own.
Anything that stresses your scalp can aggravate your psoriasis, Dr. Bagel says. “If you blow-dry your hair, make sure you don’t use the hottest setting.” Skipping the heat-shield step before applying a hot tool to your hair is among the worst hair care mistakes anyone can make. “Gently comb your hair, and not your scalp,” Dr. Bagel suggests. “Don’t pull at your hair which tugs at skin and can be source of trauma, causing psoriasis to worsen or spread.” Always tell your hair stylist that you have scalp psoriasis and let him or her know if you are sensitive to high heats, pulling, or rough scalp massages, the NPF suggests.

Recently, in a retrospective Spanish study of systemic therapies in psoriasis, adverse events of any type were less frequent with biotechnological agents than with conventional systemic therapy, with no age dependent differences. However, severe adverse events were more common in the elderly, probably due to the characteristics of this population and not to the treatment of psoriasis itself. Risk of adverse events with biotechnological therapy was the same for both groups, young adults and elderly. Since biotechnology appears to be safer than conventional therapy, there is a need for further studies to clarify its role in the geriatric population and to demystify its lack of safety. 49

Psoriasis is generally thought to be a genetic disease that is triggered by environmental factors. In twin studies, identical twins are three times more likely to be affected compared to non-identical twins. This suggests that genetic factors predispose to psoriasis. Symptoms often worsen during winter and with certain medications, such as beta blockers or NSAIDs. Infections and psychological stress can also play a role. Psoriasis is not contagious. The underlying mechanism involves the immune system reacting to skin cells. Diagnosis is typically based on the signs and symptoms.
