What Bit Me? Parham C TABLE 3. Injury (Koebner phenomenon) Diagnose This Testicular Cancer If your symptoms don’t respond to topical treatments, phototherapy with a laser or non-laser light source may help. For example, the excimer laser focuses high-intensity light on affected areas and avoids the surrounding healthy skin. Ultraviolet (UV) light -- sometimes delivered with a hand-held device called a UV comb -- can be used to treat the entire scalp. If you have very thin hair, or a shaved head, your doctor may recommend that you go out in natural sunlight for brief periods.
Recently, in a retrospective Spanish study of systemic therapies in psoriasis, adverse events of any type were less frequent with biotechnological agents than with conventional systemic therapy, with no age dependent differences. However, severe adverse events were more common in the elderly, probably due to the characteristics of this population and not to the treatment of psoriasis itself. Risk of adverse events with biotechnological therapy was the same for both groups, young adults and elderly. Since biotechnology appears to be safer than conventional therapy, there is a need for further studies to clarify its role in the geriatric population and to demystify its lack of safety. 49
About half of the estimated 7.5 million Americans with psoriasis - which can affect any skin surface - have it on their scalp. Sometimes the scalp is the only place they have it, but that’s uncommon.
Health Topics In a population-based cross-sectional study of 9035 psoriasis patients and 90,350 matched controls without psoriasis, those with more extensive psoriatic skin disease were at greater risk for major medical comorbidities, including heart and blood vessel disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease, joint problems, and other health conditions. [17, 18] Overall, the risk for any other type of serious illness was 11% higher for people with mild psoriasis, 15% higher for patients with moderate psoriasis, and 35% higher for those with severe psoriasis. However, the available evidence on preferences for or satisfaction with the existing systemic therapies and phototherapies is surprisingly limited, and, in a recent systematic review,39 it was not possible to rank therapies according to patient preferences. For example, studies2,14,23,38 comparing preferences for classic systemic antipsoriatic therapies vs phototherapies have reported variable outcomes, with some studies showing preference for oral therapy and some for UV therapy. Patients who obtained biologicals appear to prefer these therapies over other treatments.38 Correspondingly, in a prospective study,40 patients with psoriatic arthritis achieved a rapid and sustained gain in health utility when receiving tumor necrosis factor antagonists.
