If good control of psoriasis is not achieved with topical corticosteroids, alone or in combination with calcipotriene or coal tar, consideration should be given to the addition of anthralin or tazarotene therapy. Anthralin, also known as dithranol, is an antipsoriatic topical preparation derived from wood tar.4 It has been available since 1916, but it is a second-line agent because of its irritating and staining properties.

Another topical therapy used to treat psoriasis is a form of balneotherapy, which involves daily baths in the Dead Sea. This is usually done for four weeks with the benefit attributed to sun exposure and specifically UVB light. This is cost-effective and it has been propagated as an effective way to treat psoriasis without medication. Decreases of PASI scores greater than 75% and remission for several months have commonly been observed. Side-effects may be mild such as itchiness, folliculitis, sunburn, poikiloderma, and a theoretical risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer or melanoma has been suggested. However, more recent studies have determined that there does not appear to be increased risk of melanoma in the long-term. Data are inconclusive with respect to non-melanoma skin cancer risk, but support the idea that the therapy is associated with an increased risk of benign forms of sun-induced skin damage such as, but not limited to, actinic elastosis or liver spots. Dead Sea balneotherapy is also effective for psoriatic arthritis.

As skin rashes are common, doctors have to rule out other causes, such as allergic reactions to food or medication, viruses, or eczema, before they can make a diagnosis of psoriasis. A psoriasis diagnosis requires careful visual inspection and sometimes even a skin biopsy. If you are concerned you may have psoriasis you should visit your GP or ask for a referral to a dermatologist.

Tuesday, August 16, 2016 $ 250 (Consultation Cost) It should be appreciated that scaling is not due to dryness but to the excessive production of the horny layer of the skin. Occasionally, it may be necessary to cover the scalp overnight with mineral oil. To avoid an unpleasant mess, it is necessary to cover the head with a shower cap or swim cap. With moderate or severe scalp disease, the addition of a topical steroid is often required. The potency of the steroid would depend on the severity of the condition. The type of vehicle (lotion, solution, or foam) depends on physician and patient preference. It is important to remember that the medication must get past the hair in order to reach the scalp skin. Sometimes other medications may be of benefit, such as topical calcipotriene (Dovonex, Sorilux) in a lotion or foam form. Some medications are available as combinations of topical steroid and calcipotriene.

Injury Nightshade Plants Some people report that consuming plants from the “nightshade family” — which includes peppers, white potatoes, eggplant, and tomatoes — exacerbates their psoriasis. These vegetables contain solanine, a chemical compound that has been shown to trigger pain in some people. “Certain patients believe that if you avoid these vegetables, you decrease your symptoms,” Bagel says. “I’m not so sure about that, but I’m not opposed to people trying it.”

Itching is one of the most common–and vexing–symptoms of scalp psoriasis, says Harold Farber, MD of Philadelphia. And itching begets inflammation and can cause your scalp psoriasis to spread to previously unaffected areas via the Koebner phenomenon. Scalp psoriasis tends to itch more than other body parts, and not scratching is easier said than done, Dr. Farber says. Making matters even more difficult, stress tends to travel with psoriasis and many of us cope with stress by … scratching. Scalp psoriasis treatments including OTC topical creams, gels, lotions, ointments, pads, shampoos, and sprays to help curb the itch. But “be careful applying these products to inflamed scales as they can burn or sting,” he says. Other anti-itch treatment options can include topical steroids and oral antihistamines.
