School & Family Life What Is Sweet Syndrome? Psoriasis (pronounced: suh-RYE-uh-sus) is a disease that causes skin cells to build up on the surface of the skin. There they form itchy, red areas (called plaques) and thick scales. Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body, but is usually found on the scalp, knees, elbows, and torso.

Psoriasis is a noncontagious, chronic skin disease that produces plaques of thickened, scaly skin. The dry flakes of silvery-white skin scales result from the excessively rapid proliferation of skin cells. Psoriasis is fundamentally an immune system problem. The proliferation of skin cells is triggered by inflammatory chemicals produced by specialized white blood cells called T-cells. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp.
Psoriatic disease (when a person has psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis) may be treated with drugs (such as methotrexate) or a combination of drugs and creams or ointments.

Psoriasis vulgaris (also known as chronic stationary psoriasis or plaque-like psoriasis) is the most common form and affects 85%–90% of people with psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis typically appears as raised areas of inflamed skin covered with silvery-white scaly skin. These areas are called plaques and are most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp, and back. Psoriatic erythroderma (erythrodermic psoriasis) involves widespread inflammation and exfoliation of the skin over most of the body surface. It may be accompanied by severe dryness, itching, swelling, and pain. It is often the result of an exacerbation of unstable plaque psoriasis, particularly following the abrupt withdrawal of systemic glucocorticoids. This form of psoriasis can be fatal as the extreme inflammation and exfoliation disrupt the body's ability to regulate temperature and perform barrier functions.

Coal tar is available as an ointment, cream, lotion, shampoo, bath oil and soap. Coal tar is most effective when it is used in combination with other agents, especially ultraviolet B light. Like calcipotriene, coal tar is effective when it is combined with topical corticosteroids. Coal tar shampoo can be used in combination with a corticosteroid scalp solution for the treatment of psoriasis on the scalp.

Sepsis (Blood Poisoning) Biologics are manufactured proteins that interrupt the immune process involved in psoriasis. Unlike generalised immunosuppressive drug therapies such as methotrexate, biologics target specific aspects of the immune system contributing to psoriasis. These medications are generally well-tolerated and limited long-term outcome data have demonstrated biologics to be safe for long-term use in moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. However, due to their immunosuppressive actions, biologics have been associated with a small increase in the risk for infection.

Heidenreich R an injury to the skin, such as a burn, cut, or bruise Practice Management Due to the high rate of side effects with conventional psoriasis treatment, many people with the condition consider using alternative therapies. In one survey almost half (43%) of the respondents reported trying over-the-counter medications or alternative therapies including herbal remedies, acupuncture and relaxation to treat psoriasis. 10% of the people were using some form of alternative therapy at the time of the survey. The majority (52%) reported no improvement in their condition with use of alternative therapy. There is little evidence to suggest that alternative therapies are effective in treating psoriasis. However, those who are interested in trying alternative therapies should discuss the available evidence with their doctor.

A/Prof Baker described psoriasis as a "troublesome, chronic skin condition - red scaly pacthes - sometimes just as dandruff, sometimes as a small patch just on the part of the body not causing great trouble; but we've understood now that psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder, and that it has other systems, it affects other systems of the body, like the joints."
A study in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology also reports that capsaicin may hold promise as a psoriasis treatment. Capsaicin creams are available in pharmacies and health food stores.

Medical Reference 20 / 22 Psoriasis Slideshow Fall and winter may bring shorter days, colder temperatures, and dry air. These can all lead to worsening psoriasis symptoms. The sun's ultraviolet light hinders the rapid growth of skin cells that is characteristic of psoriasis. Therefore, spending less time in the sun may cause psoriasis symptoms to flare. The dry weather may remove moisture in your skin so it is important to use moisturizer and/or a humidifier at home.
