Having a family member with the condition increases your risk for developing psoriasis. However, many people with the condition have no family history at all. Some people with a family history won’t develop psoriasis.
Treat sudden flares of psoriasis on the hands and feet promptly and carefully. In some cases, cracking, blisters and swelling accompany flares. Nail changes occur in up to 50 percent of people with psoriasis and at least 80 percent of people with psoriatic arthritis.

Pat your skin gently dry after bathing, then immediately apply a heavy, ointment-based moisturizer while your skin is still moist. For very dry skin, oils may be preferable — they have more staying power than creams or lotions do and are more effective at preventing water from evaporating from your skin. During cold, dry weather, you may need to apply moisturizer several times a day.

Anyone can have psoriasis. About 7.5 million people in the U.S. are affected, and it occurs equally in men and women. Psoriasis can occur at any age but is most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 to 25. It is more frequent in Caucasians.
See above Treatment of Skin Lesions for a discussion on different treatment options. All newer medications, especially the biologic therapies, are extremely expensive, with cash prices ranging from $30,000 per year to over $80,000 per year. Other medications, topical and systemic, that have been available for decades have been subjected to regular price increases, which, while keeping them less expensive than a newer biologic agent, has still resulted in them being very expensive. This usually includes generic medications, when generics are available.
Exercise both increases the body’s production of endorphins (chemicals that improve mood and energy) and reduces levels of the body’s stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. So more exercise may prove helpful for overall stress and for fewer and less-severe flares.

Allergy to retinoids Psoriasis affects about 2 percent of the U.S. population. In 1990, psoriasis was the reason for more than 1 million visits to physicians.1 In the past, the treatment of psoriasis was primarily managed by dermatologists; this disorder accounted for only 0.4 percent of skin-related visits to family physicians.2 The number of patients treated by family physicians, however, is likely to have steadily increased as more patients seek medical care of psoriasis from their primary care physicians.
Adverse effects: Women of childbearing age must use effective birth control measures. Birth control must be continued for at least three years after the woman stops taking acitretin because the drug stays in the body for a very long time and will hurt unborn babies. Caution must be used if the individual has kidney or liver problems. Contact the doctor immediately if one develops a rash or skin or vision changes.
Cyclosporine can increase the risk for infections, and use for greater than one year is not recommended. Some healthcare professionals will suggest that patients take a "holiday" from cyclosporine, use other treatments in the interim, and then return to cyclosporine therapy again later. This may help to lessen severe side effects like kidney damage or high blood pressure. Cyclosporine can be used in combination with emollients.

Plaque psoriasis is the most common form of psoriasis, affecting approximately 90% of patients. It is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder in which there is an increase in the rate at which skin cells are produced and shed from the skin, appearing in the form of raised, red patches covered with a silvery scale (dead skin cells). The plaques can vary in number, size, and location but are often circular or oval shaped, and most frequently occur on the knees, elbows, scalp and sacrum (lower back). The plaques are often itchy and painful, and can crack and bleed.

Tobacco Products Scopus (1047) The use of these systemic medications, with appropriate safety considerations, is supported by Section 4 (2009) of the AAD guidelines. Increased risk of infection applies to all systemic immune-suppressing medications, especially when used in combinations. Many of the therapies for psoriasis manipulate the function of the immune system and expose the patient to risk of severe infections while blunting the body’s response. In these patients, findings suggestive of minor infections must be taken seriously, and the risk versus the benefit of continuing the drug in the face of the infection must be weighed.
