To further investigate the influence of participants' sociodemographic and socioeconomic characteristics on the RIS, multivariate linear regression analysis was performed. In these models, the RIS for each attribute was used as the dependent variable, and age, sex, marital status, income, and PASI and DLQI were included as independent variables. Working status was not included in the regression analyses because of possible multicollinearity (working status was highly correlated with income). A model was created for each treatment attribute using the function RIS = β0 + β1 sex + β2 age + β3 marital status + β4 income + β5 PASI + β6 DLQI, with β0 as a constant for neglected factors and β1-6 as the coefficients to be estimated.34 β indicates how the value of the RIS changes when one of the independent variables is changed and the other independent variables are held constant. Standardized regression coefficients were calculated and reported to enable comparison of the effect of each independent variable on the RIS, although different measurement units were used for the independent variables. Significance was again assessed at P ≤ .05.

This suggests an underlying genetic component, but the disease may not emerge unless an environmental factor triggers it to become active. At least 10 percent of the population are thought to have the gene that causes psoriasis, but only 2 to 3 percent of people develop it.

Animal Learning & Intelligence Patient Stories Posted over an hour ago With full approval of our institutional review board, informed consent was obtained. The patient's scalp was mapped using clear plastic templates. Immediately before treatment, a score of 9 was noted on the modified Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), which is used to assess erythema, induration, and scaling (0, none; 1, slight; 2, moderate; 3, severe; and 4, very severe). Half of the large psoriatic plaque was treated with the 308-nm excimer laser using the scalp delivery device; the other half served as a control. Mineral oil was applied to both areas before the treatment began. A 2.5-cm spot size was used, with pulses delivered in a 25% overlapping fashion. The initial dose administered was 200 mJ/cm2, and subsequent doses were increased incrementally by 50 to 200 mJ/cm2 based on the patient's tolerance, ie, the sensation and/or clinical appearance of burning. Her final dose was 3600 mJ/cm2. The psoriatic plaque was to be treated 2 times per week, every 48 to 72 hours, for up to 30 treatments or until clinical clearing was noted (modified PASI score, ≤3). Our patient required only 22 treatments before clearing occurred. The average time of each painless treatment was less than 10 minutes. Between treatments and during the follow-up period, only the use of over-the-counter antidandruff shampoos was allowed.

Psoriasis Triggers and Treatments show more Long-term use or overuse of strong corticosteroids can cause thinning of the skin. Topical corticosteroids may stop working over time. It's usually best to use topical corticosteroids as a short-term treatment during flares.

Vitamin D analogs have been shown to induce dose-dependent anti-proliferative and pro-differentiating effects in the epidermal keratinocytes of psoriatic skin.35,36 Unlike the corticosteroids, vitamin D analogs do not induce skin atrophy, and so have become a regular player in the roster of topical therapies for psoriasis.

The exact cause remains unknown. A combination of elements, including genetic predisposition and environmental factors, are involved. It is common for psoriasis to be found in members of the same family. Defects in the immune system and the control of inflammation are thought to play major roles. Certain medications like beta-blockers have been linked to psoriasis. Despite research over the past 30 years, the "master switch" that turns on psoriasis is still a mystery.
Recent changes Patient Navigation Center Resources Cradle cap Given that many insurance formularies primarily cover traditional systemic therapies and that MTX and phototherapy are generally well tolerated and cost effective, patients may need to be treated with traditional agents before escalating to biologics. Prior to starting treatment with any biologic, patients should typically be screened for tuberculosis (TB), human immunodeficiency virus infection, and immunization for, exposure to, and/or infection with hepatitis B and C virus, and any other active infections. In patients who do not demonstrate hepatitis immunity, the hepatitis B vaccine should be administered prior to starting treatment with a biologic.14 In psoriasis patients with latent TB, 2 months of treatment should be completed before initiating biologic therapy8; once a biologic has been initiated, all patients should be screened annually for TB.
Other options like methotrexate and cyclosporine (which are chemotherapy drugs) may also be considered, though they can have serious side effects and require blood monitoring. "With methotrexate, you can have liver issues and cyclosporine can affect the kidneys and blood pressure," says Dr. Klein.

Psoriasis commonly occurs on the scalp, which may cause fine, dry, scaly skin or heavily crusted plaque areas. This plaque may flake or peel off in clumps. Scalp psoriasis may resemble seborrheic dermatitis, but in that condition the scales are greasy and not dry.

Psoriasis is caused, at least in part, by the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy skin cells. If you’re sick or battling an infection, your immune system will go into overdrive to fight the infection. This might start another psoriasis flare-up. Strep throat is a common trigger.

Articles from Anais Brasileiros de Dermatologia are provided here courtesy of Sociedade Brasileira de Dermatologia Cyclosporine is a potent immunosuppressive drug used for other medical uses, including organ transplantation. It may be used for severe, difficult-to-treat cases of widespread psoriasis. Improvement and results may be very rapid in onset. It may be hard to get someone off of cyclosporine without flaring their psoriasis. Because of the potential cumulative toxicity, cyclosporine should not be used for more than one to two years for most psoriasis patients. Major possible side effects include kidney and blood-pressure problems.
