About This Site Ebola Physical therapy Psoriatic arthritis. In addition to inflamed, scaly skin, psoriatic arthritis causes swollen, painful joints that are typical of arthritis. Sometimes the joint symptoms are the first or only manifestation of psoriasis or at times only nail changes are seen. Symptoms range from mild to severe, and psoriatic arthritis can affect any joint. Although the disease usually isn't as crippling as other forms of arthritis, it can cause stiffness and progressive joint damage that in the most serious cases may lead to permanent deformity.

Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Headlines Biologics that control the body’s immune response are routinely used to treat severe psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. These drugs, which are made from human or animal proteins, are quite effective but extremely expensive. They include adalimumab (Humira), brodalumab (Siliq) etanercept (Enbrel), guselkumab (Tremfya) ixekizumab (Taltz), secukinumab (Cosentyx), and ustekinumab (Stelara).
For moderate to severe psoriasis that involves much larger areas of the body (>10% or more of the total skin surface), topical products may not be effective or practical to apply. This may require ultraviolet light treatments or systemic (total body treatments such as pills or injections) medicines. Internal medications usually have greater risks. Because topical therapy has no effect on psoriatic arthritis, systemic medications are generally required to stop the progression to permanent joint destruction.

Topical treatments such as creams and gels which are applied directly to the site of psoriatic skin rash are the most commonly used therapies. Topical treatments are typically safe and may be used alone (in cases of mild disease) or in combination with systemic or phototherapies (discussed below) in cases of moderate-severe disease. When deciding which topical treatment is best, it is important to consider the time and difficulty involved in applying the treatment. Preparations which can be applied easily with little mess are recommended, as when the treatment is easy to use, it is more likely to be used frequently and as recommended by the doctor.

That’s because the scalp doesn’t respond the same way. Hair blocks some or all of the light, but you may achieve better results if you part your hair in many rows.
